MY GOD... how did I forget about Layne?!

Damn I miss some classic Alice in Chains... "Bleed the Freak" still is one of my favorite songs.
 Quoting: Roentgen®

Yep, love that song too.... and I definitely miss Layne. Recently, I was able to talk my girlfriend into using Layne as our baby daughter's middle name. :-)

 Quoting: Ambassador of Kickyourassador

I really wanted to be able to see them live (with Layne) but he passed before that opportunity arrived.

I've been able to see all of my favorite bands in concert with the exception of Alice in Chains, Green Day (yes, love them or hate them... they are catchy and influential), and R.E.M. (yes.. god damnit... I LIKE R.E.M.)
 Quoting: Roentgen®

Nothing wrong with REM. Especially their 80's and early 90's stuff. I did have the pleasure of seeing AIC with Layne once. I'm pretty sure it was the last show he ever played with them. Kansas City- July 1996 when they opened up for Kiss.
 Quoting: Ambassador of Kickyourassador

Most people throw salt for my liking of R.E.M.... I assume it's because Michael Stipe is gay, but whatever... the man writes great lyrics. I applaud you for not hating on me for liking R.E.M.

applause2

You are a lucky ass individual for getting to experience AIC with Layne. I'm sure it was a memorable moment and it's definitely something that many fans will, unfortunately, never get to experience.

also... if that was you that threw the good karma for liking AIC, let me know. I'll reciprocate the favor.

Layne Staley, of course.

 Quoting: Ambassador of Kickyourassador

Yes, I loved Layne. I was a HUGE AIC fan until he died. The last couple of years before his death I had a terrible foreboding about him. You could feel it coming.

The woman had power and passion and meaning in her singing but god damn I couldn't stand her voice.

Cliff Burton.

Without a doubt my fav band would still be kicking out massive music instead of the drivel they do now.

 Quoting: bloodcircle

They still were kicking a lot of ass for the years after Burton's death... (arguably less from the Black album - S&M, depending on how you view the music.) Metallica's ultimate death came when Jason Newstead left... Burton was fantastic... Jason was an awesome replacement.... and this new dude, while a good bassist, just doesn't seem to fit... and the music since this new guy joined has been garbage.
 Quoting: Roentgen®

Let me tell you something,Robert Trujillo is far more talented than that band needs...
Go listen to some Infectious Grooves or Suicidal Tendencies and say that.Secondly do you think for a minute Robert writes any of the music? Thirdly that band died musically when Cliff left this mortal coil...
You stand corrected...

Re: If you could bring back to life ONE musician that died before their 35th birthday, who would you choose?
So far I'm just seeing the usual suspects (except D. Boon, thanks for that)
Clifford Brown--maybe the greatest jazz trumpet player ever, was a gentleman, a nice guy, and he was clean (of drugs). Died in a car wreck between gigs.
Lee Morgan--trumpeter, member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (Clifford Brown was too), was shot by his jealous wife when she saw him talking to another woman at a jazz club.
notable mention: Booker Little and Fats Navarro, two other trumpet greats who died too early.
Nick Drake--genius guitarist singer, died from early psych medicine overdose. His music is being heard still...lately on a Volkswagon TV adds...Pink Moon...
Jaco Pastorious--revolutionized fretless bass guitar and did things with harmonics, melody and rhythm far beyond what people were capable of at the time... listen to Joni Mitchell's Hjera album. Suffered from bi-polar disease, was beaten to death by a very ignorant club bouncer.

Damn, didn't realize Bonham was that young when he died. I was a pretty serious drummer for a while and Bonham was my main inspiration. I even sounded a lot like him in terms of style (though no where near as good, of course).
