These trees were chewed up by what? I'm guessing deer.

Could be a beaver as they are active at times in the winter and could be feeding on trees at points above a snow pack.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I have lots of stories!

First, my mom and brothers' story. They were driving home (probably 14 years ago) and saw a panther sitting on the side of the road. (we live in the mdidle of nowhere). This was in western Arkansas...it was near our house, so my mom called Game & Fish Commission since my brother and I were young at the time. They told her she was crazy and that there are no panthers in Arkansas. They said there used to be but there were no longer. Well, she told a few other people and others had seen them too, not often but they knew they existed. My mom later got into Wildlife Rehabilitation (she loves animals) and the man who trained her for a year or so told her the Game and Fish Commission along with most of our government try to hide things like that (duh, but it makes you wonder what else they lie about). He had no idea why they lied about it but he said he had officers SEE a panther with their own eyes and still deny it. They're endangered, but there.

Saw one myself, this past Spring (2011) in my back pasture, crossing behind our pond to a treeline next to our creek.

It was HUGE and very muscular.

Interesting that they officially do not exist, and yet it is a crime to kill one here.

That makes me think of the earlier post in this thread where someone came across a tree totally debarked about 25 feet up the trunk - HOW BIG was the creature THAT time? yikes
I'm in a rural area 50 miles south of Shreveport La., about 90 miles from the Arkansas border.

We had a huge tree in the woods beside out house with claw marks from knee level to about 8 or 9 feet up - the bark was absolutely shredded. I'll have to see if my hubby still has that photo on his phone & post it here if he does.

Cool stories, btw!

Yes. I've got all kinds of trees with mountain lion claw marks on my property. I've seen one stroll through my property and heard them many a time. This in an area in which the mountain lion is said to have long been gone.
"Officially" they are escaped pets.;)

The"escaped pets" are breeding as youngsters have been spotted.

There are reports of people having seen mountains lions being released by "officials" back in the '70's.

Very intelligent deduction, however, we have had absoutely no snow this year (winterless). But, I will accept it to be beaver activity.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I've seen plenty of unusual things in remote wooded areas of the Appalachian mts. Several years ago my frind and I went on a trout fishing and camping excursion into the backwoods of southeast WV. We set up camp and walked a mile or so upstream and fished most of the day making our way back towards the campground. We cooked up fresh trout and drank a few cold ones around the fire until around 2 am. After about an hour of sleep my buddy wakes me up and says, we've got company. I heard dogs barking and distant voices coming from the hillside above us Kind of startled because it's 3 am, and we're in the middle of nowhere and at least 20 miles from any kind of civilization. We climbed out of the tent and looked towards the hill behind us and saw flashlights headed towards our location, probably 300 yards away. I decided to walk to my truck to get a flashlight and when I opened the door my buddy yells, dude what the fuck, I turn towards him and see a giant sized man walk between us, just casually walking along carrying a teddy bear ( stuffed animal ). I just froze with my light pointed towards him and he stopped walking, turned around and smiled at me. He had to have been over 7ft tall, and he had make up on and what appeared to be lipstick. Then he turned back around and casually walked down the hill towards the creek.

A few minutes later three men in uniform with dogs on leashes came into our camp and asked if we'd seen anyone tonight. My friend and I just pointed towards the creek and described our encounter. They told us a patient had escaped from an asylum recently. They said we weren't safe here until he is caught and told us to leave and they headed down towards the creek after him. So we packed up and left, neither of us said a word we were still scared shitless.

About a week later my buddy comes by and says , you gotta see this, he looked like he'd seen a ghost and was having a difficult time breathing. He pulls out his digital camera and shows me the pictures he took on that particular camping trip. Quickly flipping through pictures of trout and the landscape, etc. He stops at a picture of me wading in the creek fishing and zooms in to the woods and bank behind me and points to the face of the 7 ft man we saw. He was watching us from behind a tree. Chillls.

Holy crap this gave me the chills I would be scarred for life having witnessed that and seeing his face in the woods.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
Me and my friends were 14 in Western Maryland. My family were camping in some campground near the Catoctin area. The first night, my friend Collin said it would be neat to sneak out at midnight when my parents go to bed in the camper, walk a mile and a half down 70 and to Cunningham Falls at night. So it's 11pm, we each pack water, trail mix from cereals and etc, a flashlight, batteries, switchblade, my dads' army knives, and rope (We thought Cunningham Falls needed rope to climb, but you can scramble up easily).

...

Seriously, what. the. fuck?
wtf

FYI - I was associated with a group many years ago, and the "leader" of that group received what was said to be channelled information from a ouija board. The first time I heard the word Catoctin was in one of those channeling sessions. They were told that there was some sort of secret base beneath Catoctin.

Few years back when I was working in the UK, a friend came over to visit. Not weird? Well, she knocks on my door just as the 9 pm news was starting, after traveling from her home over 20 miles away.

I asked her what time she set off and she says 'I'm not sure, but the 9'o'clock news was just starting'. We phoned her mother asking when my friend had left and her ma says 'she's just gone out of the door, she must still be in the driveway'.

When I was in the USAF I was stationed at George AFB Ca. It was in 1984 when I was hunting jackrabbits in the desert near apple valley,a couple miles off Muni rd.,I was near an odd rock formation,a kind of rock maze. A flash of light got my attention and I looked through the scope of my 30.06. It was a dog with tags on its collar standing outside the "rock maze" and it started barking at me. I started walking toward the dog, and the dog got more and more anxious as I closed the 300 yd. distace. When I was about 50 ft. away, the dog ran into the maze, and I followed its barking into the maze, and I heard another dog yelping pitifully. When I had tracked down the source of the yelping, it was a black collie with 20 ft. of chain jammed into a wedge of the rocks, the collie had been there for several days. The other dog was some kind of hunting dog,and was some loyal friend to that collie to stay there for however many days it were before I showed up and undone the chain from the collar of his friend. The dogs both jumped up and licked my face before running off across the desert toward Apple Valley.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
There are a lot of weird things in NEPA woods.

Coal mining stuff, Native American stuff, Paths in the woods that used to be used by carriages, porn, outhouses

My town is set in the woods basically, and one time me and a bunch of friends went to an old abandoned building, that used to be a mill, and on the one floor there were thousands of some type of scattered checks. They all had names on them, but if I remember correctly, the letters looked typed. It was really weird, and I always wondered where it came from. The whole building was weird though, really.

He had no idea why they lied about it but he said he had officers SEE a panther with their own eyes and still deny it. They're endangered, but there.

We live in some pretty thick woods. I've actually lived in 2 different areas. In the first house, we lived in an old house. It came with 2 barns, tons of land, and an outhouse. There was also PART of another, bigger house out back that the slave owners had lived in. We lived in the "slave" house, someone had added on to it. I won't go into details with this house except that it was so old you could push on it and the halls would move, and I'd say it was definitely haunted, but that's a story for another thread. Anyway, the land this farm was on, there was a civil war battle that happened there. If we walked into the woods near the creek, there were some crazy things. The feeling of being watched, we found cannonballs, old buttons, old clothes...I haven't been there in years (lived there when I was 8 and 9) and actually just got married and live nearby. We're going to check the place out this weekend, because I'm so curious.

On the other land we lived on, we had a huge field, a creek, and then behind the house, a hill with a bluff at the top. It took 20-30 minutes to climb up the hill to get to the bluff. About halfway up, someone (Native Americans I'm sure) had taken the time to find a flat spot, flatten it more, knock down every tree and clear it of rocks. My mom and I found this spot and just stopped dead in our tracks. A huge clearing, on the side of a hill that was flat. No trees, no rocks. I haven't dug around much up there but we did find a rock object that looked like it was carved into some kind of...masher. Like you'd mash potatoes or other things with. There was a creek by our house, too, and we once found a rock there that had been hollowed out in the middle like a bowl. We also had places out in the woods that were cleared like someone had been buried there, like body-sized areas with no trees or rocks on it. I found one that looked slightly fresh once, in the middle of the woods, maybe 1-2 years old. I instantly got a creepy feeling and my friend and I had found it, so we went back and got shovels and dug, and dug, and dug, thinking someone was buried there...we never found anything but I'm not sure we dug deep enough either. My parents live there and I always think of going back to dig even deeper. We also had huge trees with rocks collected on one side, definitely where bodies were buried. And on the edge of the woods, huge, huge piles of rocks and dirt...not sure what that would be about. And by the creek on the edge of the woods in the field, we have an area surrounded by these yellow flowers, not sure of the kind. Obviously there used to be a house there, which is super neat to me.

Once we were walking along and by those flowers, we found a little calf just laying there, I guess it's momma had left it there for a while. It was just really unexpected. And near there we also stumbled across a huuuuuge clearing. We crossed the creek and slipped between a few trees, and there was an absolutely huge clearing there, surrounded by trees, but no trees IN it, bigger than 3/4 (1200-1300 sq foot)houses put together...but here's the kicker. It was full of bones. Mostly cow bones (the people who own the land next to us have thousands of cows) but it also had raccoon/armadillo/etc. bones there. I just found it odd that they picked THAT area as their boneyard. Creeped me out the first time I saw it, before I realized it was cows.

Oh, and once when I was 12 or so we were up camping in those woods...about 10 of us. I was in the tent with my cousin, who was about 14 at the time. My dad had the flashlight and I don't remember what he was doing, I knew it had something to do with my brother, who was about 9...I assume he had to go pee and didn't want to do it in the dark. Anyway everyone else besides us, my dad, and brother was sitting around the campfire about 20 feet away. My dad was standing by the entrance to our tent (tent opening was facing west) and we were sitting in the tent (had those mesh windows facing north and south). My dad was facing the north shining the light back and forth. Not sure what my cousin and I were doing in the tent but she said "Oh my god, look" and I could tell she was scared. She pointed out the north tent window and I didn't see anything at first. My dad shined the light around and instantly I saw what she was talking about. I SWEAR it was Bigfoot. I could see the eyes and hair, it was tall...it's head was above a branch in the tree and he was looking straight in at us. I was in shock...my dad shined the light over it's face and then back, when he shined it over again there was nothing there at all. I never heard it move, I don't know how it happened but my cousin and I both saw it. I asked her what she thought she saw and she said Bigfoot so to this day I know it's not BS...not sure what else it could have been. I know my dad didn't see it and he doesn't believe in that stuff anyway.

Another time we were camping on the Buffalo River (I think I was about 14) in the Ozarks, on the bank, not on a campground. Across the bank, there was a huge cliff. Well, everything was fine, until we went to sleep. My brother and I were in the tent and my parents stayed up for awhile by the fire. I woke up to a BOOM, like somebody had slammed something into the rocks on the bank. I noticed my mom and dad were still outside, and said "Mom? What was that?" and she said "Honey, stay in the tent. Shhh" and I knew it was something weird. I heard them talking quietly and then heard a splash. I heard my mom go "oh my god" and so of course I disobeyed and got out of the tent. It happened a few times for me to witness. We couldn't really see up on the cliff but we could tell it was coming from there - something was throwing rocks at us and obviously didn't want us there. Not just something - something big. They were pretty big rocks. It was FREAKY. Scared the crap out of me. It stopped after a few more times but I don't think my parents slept that night, and I'm not sure how I did!
 Quoting: arkansasgirl11 12139249

I'm also from Arkansas, though I live in IL now. Buffalo River is one of my favorite places. I try to canoe it every year. I've done the float from Rush to WR dozens of times. Never saw the mountain man, though.

Which part of the river was this, if you don't mind saying. Did you know that a "guide" was recently arrested with 20 or 30 paying customers, camping on the banks of the river near Ponca, I think, taking them to see the big guy?

I LOVE this thread!! It's like an old friend, showing up every once in awhile with lots of new stories.

Here's my story. It's not scary like the others, but it made a big impression on me at the time.

It was 1970 or 71. I was a "city girl" who had married into a "good ol' boy" family. Well, it was traditional for the family to go deer hunting together. The place where they would all congregate was called "French Camp", near Yosemite in California. Anyway, when all the guys would leave before dawn the women would stay in camp, usually go back to bed to get up again around 9 or 10 am, then putt around the camp until the guys would all come back in. The women really had no interest in hunting; I think the guys just brought us along to cook for them etc.

Anyway, this was pretty BORING for me, so one morning when the rest of the women went back to bed I decided to go for a walk. There was a little trail, and I figured as long as I stayed on the trail I could just turn around and get back to camp. I'd never been out in that much Nature at one time, so I was taking my time and looking at the plants and trees and stuff. I came around a bend in the trail, and looked ahead and realized I was looking into the eyes of a fawn. He/she still had a few spots left (which is how I figured out that it was a fawn). We just stood there looking at each other - about 10 feet apart. There was massive brush alongside both sides of the trail at that point, almost like a tunnel. Suddenly there was a sort of whistle, (must have been Mama) and the fawn bolted away. Having never seen anything larger than a German Shepherd dog, seeing that fawn really made an impression on me. It was my "secret" memory, and I was happy inside when the guys got "skunked" and came back deer-less - I couldn't imagine killing such a beautiful creature.

damn, I'm gonna have to go through these and read them all.. but I can only just remember one thing for me that stands out.

I was searching for dope in the woods, a kid, 15-16.

I came across something very weird, I'd like to say it was the "predator", but something rushed by me, and then in between some trees,... this spooked THE SHIT out of me.
it was not human, nor a large animal.
never forget it

I ducked low for about 4-5 minutes, an eternity. and then I RAN.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
Back in the early 70's I was driving on highway that was also a logging road in Washington state.
I pulled over to go pee and walked into the tall trees just off the road. I catch a glimpse of bright light thru' the forest and walk maybe 100' to see what is so bright.
The forest simply ended and I walked out to see miles of stubbled hills and valleys.
Miles and miles of cut timber. There are no trees or forest to be seen except the narrow strip of thick trees alongside the miles of road.

I was stunned. They'd cut all the trees uniformly like a man's 3 day stubble of beard on his face.
I got this sensation of being witness to something sinister but more than anything, the confusion made me feel kind of numb.

Here's the wierdest part. I get back on the road and within a few minutes I am run off the road by logging truck going at least 75+mph. I watched in my rear view mirror that the semi truck wasn't going to slow down - in fact, the semi was bearing down - and so I floored it. My car was a 71 VW Super Bug and I was going as fast as I could but that giant semi kept getting closer and closer in my rear view mirror.
Finally I veer right.. onto the shoulder and almost lose control while the thing blows by me like a freight train with 2 open container loads full of logs.

He would have slammed into me if I hadn't pulled over.

My heart is racing so I turn off the engine even tho' my car is facing sideways and I'm in a bad place to park.

Then, I get another impression. This time that the forest area I was passing thru' was being raped and killed. And that tourists, locals and anyone driving that road was being faked-out.. lied to... it was all a facade.. and I had discovered the ugly secret.

I'll try to find the time to write a few more stories this weekend. I'm out of the really weird stories but I have had some very interesting animal encounters while exploring the northern woods of MI ;-)

Have a great weekend
