To explain Matthew 27:46 we need to look at Psalm 22. Psalm 22 is a prayer made by David that can carry us from great suffering ti great joy (just as Jesus' death and resurrection did). You see David felt rejected when he wrote Psalm 22, but he believed that God Almighty would lead him out of despair. Psalm 22 begins with the same words that Jesus spoke in Matthew 27:46. Psalm 22 gave an amazingly accurate descriptionn of the suffering our Messiah, Jesus Christ, endured hundreds of years later. Jesus quoted Psalm 22:1 as he hung on the cross carrying our burden of sin. It was not a cry of doubt but an urgent appeal to God. It was a deep expression of the anguish he felt as he took on the sins of the world which caused him to be seperated from his Father. There is no doubt that the physical agony was horrible, but even worse was the period of spiritual seperation from God. It was like a double death, the physical and temporary spiritual seperation. He did this to solidify the convenant so that we would never have to experience eternal seperation from God.
