I am, correction, was, a hobby bee keeper for a few years. I have corn fields all around me. I lost all my bees last winter and gave up.

The state bee inspector (until recently) was my son's good friend. My son left the hives in my care when he went off to school.

The inspector told me last spring that the big boys (he's pretty big, with 300 hives) had lost 30-40% of their hives in the northern midwest over the winter. The inspector is a retired chemist and knows what he is talking about. One of the chemicals they soak the corn seeds in has a nicotine extract in it. It travels up the plant and deposits in the silk. The bees pick it up and take it back to the hive. It disorients bees and screws them up at a concentration as low as one or two parts per billion. I said Billion. That's only one of the chemicals/problems you deal with in bee keeping. After I heard that I decided bee keeping was not worth the trouble. At least not until I move out of corn country.

From his perspective, he does not need bees to pollinate his corn. It is self pollinating. He does need bees to pollinate his pumpkins, but some guy commercially provides bumblebees to do that. He drops cardboard boxes of bumblebees out in the fields when the time is right. He never comes back around to get them, he just provides new bumblebees next year.

I'm not making any judgments on these things, just providing information.

I'll say one more thing before I quit.

We have Japanese beetles horrible around here. Two years ago they ate the leaves off two of my fruit trees. I dealt with it by hanging those catch bags around, with the scent wafer that smells like citronella. I had to empty the bags every other day. This summer they were so bad farmers had to airplane spray their corn, cause the beetles eat the tassels. No tassels, no corn. No corn, no beef and pork.

If the nicotine had not already killed my bees the pesticides would have, absolutely no doubt. I understand the farmers spraying, they are trying to make a living. I'm not smart enough to show them a better way.

This winter has been unusually warm. I'm guessing the Japanese beetles will out number corn stalks out here in the country this summer.

An insecticide used as a seed treatment on genetically modified corn and other crops has been found to be highly toxic to honey bees, according to a study published recently in the journal PLoS ONE.

The study may be a key to solving the mystery of Colony Collapse Disorder that has decimated bee populations over the last five years, causing losses of 30% and more of honey bee colonies every year since 2006, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

SO..they have also caused the mass bee die-off it seems.

OK, one more response. There is a historically low inventory of grain worldwide right not. We add 80 million mouths to the world each year. So demand is going up.

If we have a bad harvest on two continents the same year people are going to starve (even more than usual). If we went back to heirloom corn seed, people are going to starve. We had a mini drought around here two summers ago. The GM corn seeds allowed the harvest of a pretty impressive corn crop, even though my well dried up for awhile.

The GM seed corn is rootworm resistant now, so that cuts down on some of the rootworm spraying that kills bees.

It is a very complex issue. The genetic modification of seed may turn out to have Frankenstein results. But from the standpoint of the scientists, they are using science and technology to solve problems, which solutions make life better (at least in the short run).

I was watching the story of us or whatever it was called on the History Channel a couple of nights ago. The living conditions and amount of work that the people had to do who stettled these plains was heartbreaking. Science has up till now made life better for us, generally speaking. I can't help thinking though, as some of you seem to, that there will be heck to pay in the end.

It is still possible to beekeep in central Illinois. But you have to find hilly areas where corn is not grown. Bees travel up to two miles from the hive. You must have at least 1/2 mile of pasture or woods on all sides of your hives 1 mile is even better. These areas are highly sought after and you have to have a relationship with the land owner. Then you can do it.

Forget living at my house with corn/beans all around and try to have bees. It is a losing proposition. Even the commercial guys will tell you this.

I guess I answered the wrong question. If you have 100 acre fields you are either going to let the beetles eat up your tassels or airplane spray. The bags work for my 6 acre homeplace.

Their are no trees or anything in the fields to hold bottles and the farmers would spend all their time driving around filling up bottles or dumping smelly bags of beetles into 55 gallon drums. Not economical.

It's my understanding that they just spray everything right from the beginning, whether it needs it or not. the fields are dead so you have to artificially fertilize, there's no natural ecosytem(to balance out the pests) with mono-cropping so you have to spray pesticides immediately. And of course you don't want any weeds so round up ready herbicide is next, and most of this is right after you plant.

I can understand using GMO's to solve various problems but that's not currently what they're being used for. Terminator seeds aren't a good thing.
Plants that produce their own pesticide, would still contain that pesticide, the creators won't even eat it.
Other than the negative environmental effects, it's mainly used for profit and control.

It's my understanding that they just spray everything right from the beginning, whether it needs it or not. the fields are dead so you have to artificially fertilize, there's no natural ecosytem(to balance out the pests) with mono-cropping so you have to spray pesticides immediately. And of course you don't want any weeds so round up ready herbicide is next, and most of this is right after you plant.

I can understand using GMO's to solve various problems but that's not currently what they're being used for. Terminator seeds aren't a good thing.
Plants that produce their own pesticide, would still contain that pesticide, the creators won't even eat it.
Other than the negative environmental effects, it's mainly used for profit and control.

You may be right about that. My neighbor really likes me, has just about adopted me. The only time I ever said something that really got to him I said this monoculture agriculture has to end sometime (i.e, huge fields with one crop). I said, your fields are dead. You can't find an earthworm out there. Look in my treeline, in my garden. Plenty of earthworms. But your field has no life at all, except the crop. You have to put tons of commercial fertilizer on it each year to grow a crop. It is not sustainable.

He hung his head and said you are right. The fertilizer is getting more expensive each year and without it we couldn't go two years.

It is a favorite poem of mine. Given the nature of odds which we find ourselves in at this time on this planet, I'd say Houseman's summation is a pretty good one.

I'll say one more thing before I quit.

We have Japanese beetles horrible around here. Two years ago they ate the leaves off two of my fruit trees. I dealt with it by hanging those catch bags around, with the scent wafer that smells like citronella. I had to empty the bags every other day. This summer they were so bad farmers had to airplane spray their corn, cause the beetles eat the tassels. No tassels, no corn. No corn, no beef and pork.

If the nicotine had not already killed my bees the pesticides would have, absolutely no doubt. I understand the farmers spraying, they are trying to make a living. I'm not smart enough to show them a better way.

This winter has been unusually warm. I'm guessing the Japanese beetles will out number corn stalks out here in the country this summer.

Find and plant milk weed near a crop the Japanese beetles love them. They weren't a problem at my house, until my husband pull up my milk weed plants. Then I had to use those bags, rotten stuff they look like when you empty them out of those bags!

Monsaton knows what these "foods" are doing to the population, based on the animal studies. Knowing what they know and continuing to push it for a short term profit is just evil. They already know that long term, GMO is completely unsustainable.
