Anonymous Coward User ID: 9746155 United States 02/23/2012 06:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was bullied in school here and there. Made me stronger person. I learned to fight back, call ppl on their bullshit, make counter threats and then show the bullies for the pussies they were once they could no longer live up to their words. One kid always threatened to hit me when I was in the third grade... and since he was two grades ahead of me... I was naturally afraid. So one day, when he got too close, I hit him first and actually broke his nose... and watched his punk ass cry in front of all the girls! He never said a single word to me again. The next guy thought he was tough, and because he was older (like the idiot above), he thought he had an edge. Never got physical until the day he kept flinging lit matches at my feet when I was in the fifth grade. I made my threat to retaliate... he lit one more match... I walked into the woods, got a sturdy stick and chased his punk ass all the way to his house. As far as the bruise and swelling on one side of his face when he forgot to keep running... hey, you play with fire, you're gonna get burned. When I was in the 6th grade, two 8th graders... again, they thought just because they took karate classes that they were tough and intimidating... decided to pick me up - and yes - plop me in the trash. When I extricated myself, they got their asses handed to them by the smart/fat kid (FYI, I was that kid in grade school). Karate does one no good when someone significantly heavier than yourself decides to tackle you, hold you down, and hit you so many times you start crying in the middle of the gym in front of all the girls with your own blood spattering around your head. The other guy, upon seeing what was happening to his best friend... literally... he shit himself right in the middle of the dance! Funny thing about that one (and I admit I went to a very small school in a very small NH town... all white kids/teachers), not one teacher/chaperone tried to stop it. They just let it all play out. I "survived" all of that just fine, and today (some 20-25 or so years later), I hear about kids offing themselves because someone called them names? The pussification of white America seems almost complete. |

Personally, when it comes to reaction to physical attacks, I think the modern idea of "walk away" is BS. Fight back to avoid becoming a victim... that should be the policy. Want to stop bullying (and again, I feel name calling is not bullying), teach kids to kick the shit out of those who would do the same to them! In places like AZ and TX, not too many people are willing to start random shit due to the fact that you never know who is carrying a gun. Say what you like about 'liberal gun laws', but TX and AZ are the two most polite places I have ever lived. Even S. Korea can't come close... and they are all about being polite. All those silly youtube vids of people acting like animals in Denny's or ChuckEchzs or the line at a fast food restaurant, few of em come from AZ or TX... and the ones that do make it to the news (if only the two I saw from AZ)... they ended in shootings! For as many ppl know, when in AZ or TX, it's best to keep to yourself and not threaten anyone with bullshit you can't follow through on! And God help those aggressors who leaven the scene of a confrontation and then come back! That's OK Corral time in AZ! Darwinism at it's finest, IMHO. Start teaching kids to band together to fight off real bullies, or at east that it is okay to knock the shit of of someone who is trying to do same to you, and the number of bullies will inevitably decrease as the reality of "keep your hands to yourself or you might get fucked up" becomes more and more mainstream. What about gangs of bullies who turn the whole school against you? How can a child concentrate and learn if people are bullying them. Quoting: Aunty Flo If it were my child being bullied. I would go to the school and start banging heads. Hmm... you make a point that I myself had not considered... a whole school against me? Still, please consider my original POV... are we talking a whole school looking to kick a kid's ass, or just pick on him/her? Yeah... I can't see myself being that odd/awkward/total fucking reject of a kid to have a whole school turn against me, be it violently or name calling. In fact, I turned out to be the toughest kid in that grade school by the end of sixth grade. There were no accounts of bullying as I recall once that mantle had been laid upon me, as the then 'tough kid' had been established... me... and I had nothing to prove. Shit man, peace was breaking out everywhere back then... even the Berlin wall was about to fall! (LOL) But if a whole school had turned against me, or did so to my kid, I would wonder what I/my kid had done to make something become manifest. From what I understand, a lot of what ppl today call bullying is little more than kids getting picked on for either being gay or not being able to let simple slights go unnoticed... then the individual says/does things to retaliate against a group and the situation escalates as cliques target the victim and spread all kinds of drivel about them. But times have changed. If ppl calling kids names accounts for bullying, so be it. I still feel that bullying is something physical in nature... but maybe I am just old school. |

You can count yourself blessed you had a healthy home life. A lot of children who are damaged by bullying come from broken homes, or have been abused. They are the ones coming to school dirty and malnourished. If you have a healthy home life, you better able to deal with being bullied at school. I wasn't bullied either because I was a tough girl. Though being the youngest of 6, I had my fair share of bullying from my older brothers. |

I understand that you are correct, of course, but what you write about seems to me like "pandering to the lowest common denominator". IMO, what you wrote about is part of the problem with this country. Just because SOME kids suffer the life you describe does not mean that the whole system should change to meet the needs of the extreme minority... it lowers the bar for all parties involved. I know, I am a horrible person for having a POV counter to your own. At the end of the day, we have been subjected to a mass social experiment that is at least two generations deep... and I just can't agree with your conclusions. Some people have to be at the bottom, no matter how hard of life story any individual might have. Not everyone can be 'average'. Someone has to represent the top and another, the bottom, of any curve. Being bullied made me a better person because it made me stronger, more resilient and better able to handle shit as an adult. I learned not to pick on ppl without expecting repercussions. I learned not to be a victim and expect more from myself and others. I learned that the weak and meek will inherit nothing more than their own grief and the pain they would allows others to put on them. |
