Are we finally on the cusp of Quantum Computing?

IBM scientists said Tuesday that they have made several breakthroughs in quantum computing that put them "on the cusp of building systems that will take computing to a whole new level."

The IBM researchers said they have established three new records "for retaining the integrity of quantum mechanical properties in quantum bits, or qubits, and reducing errors in elementary computations." Those advances, presented at this week's annual American Physical Society meeting, get the team "close to the minimum requirements for a full-scale quantum computing system as determined by the world-wide research community."

The reason we aren't seeing quantum computing thus far is because "qubits are negatively affected by both observation and interaction -- the vulnerability of these materials to interference from heat, radiation and defective materials means you can't trust the answers it provides, called quantum decoherence. Being able to produce a qubit of sufficient "integrity" that you can trust the results is what has eluded scientists for decades."

Now, they claim they'll be able to extend 4 qubits quantum state for up to 100ms...I know it doesn't seem like long, but theoretically a quantum machine knows anything and everything all at once so technically this should be long enough.

The reason for the hype? IBM built the qubits using traditional commercial chip fabrication technology...
