Why is win7 so damn slow?

OP you don't know how to tune and tweak crap.
Why???

Your PIII 1.2 Ghz laptop is ANCIENT.
Why you even attempted to load Win 7 on it is mind boggling.
...especially with 512 MB RAM.
512 MB ram is not even enough for XP to run as fast as it can.
You need AT LEAST 1 MB for XP to run freely.

I have no idea what could be going on but I would be interested in the current draw of both OS's at the AC cord with battery removed (so charging isnt a power factor)


do you have a kill-o-watt meter?

and what are the problems with reactOS you have on it?

If your com runs 7 with specs lower than that, great. If it doesn't, there's not much reason to wonder why...

Combine OP's CPU that's barely above spec and only half of the "required" RAM and you've got a computer that will barely run 7. It's pretty easy to determine why it's running slow, and it's not because it has too much memory and CPU power...

I use this rig especially for performance tests, cause what runs faster here, will deifintely run faster on newer systems too.

I mean, it's a fucking single process that win7 won't let do its task. Has nothing to too with total ram usage or other shit, or what runs in background...

There's no reason to throw away a still functioning machine that is still quite fast for standard work, only because of it's age. If it one day won't run any more, i'll can smesh it with a hammer that is 50 Years old.

I'm using firefox, and it's perofming faster and snappier here than under win7 on a machine that's 5 times as fast, because of the speed-break called dwm...

It's a principal choice: no win7 on this one - then no win7 on any machine. I'm not keen on managing differents OS's

Just make it a Linux only laptop, i'm sure there is a proper driver for the wifi somewhere. ^^

but Ive got XP down to 333mb with nlite and other tweeks..

also running XP on an old laptop w/256mb ram for data logging.

and ram booting a 1gb XP image that is fully functional.

I havnt spent much time with 7 yet as XP works so well and since they extended DRM in 7 to all software and that has been a big problem for some.

With your lack of technical understanding...you shouldn't be "managing" anything related to PC's or laptops.

time to upgrade that P3 laptop. win7 is fine.....

Power usage is about 40Watts - that's also a reason why i prefer it to my othern high-perf systems, that eat up 250Watts

I bet your hard drive is nasty slow as well. That's the weakest link.

I just made again a performance comparision between xp and win7, with video playback. Win7 needs at least 50% more power for the exact same task!

What i did, playback of the exact same file, with same codec and same setting on the same player:

CPU: Laptop P3 @1.2G
Player: mpc-hc
Codec: mpc's own
Codec: Xvid, SD 720x576, 16:9 anamorph
File: Railway docu, 2mbps

Good plan. Since you can't run MS's most recent OS on relatively ancient hardware, you'll show Microsoft who's boss and not run 7 on anything.

I have the latest bios on it that was available, and i'm not yet skilled in bios-hex-modding...

I might run it with 768 MB if i disable acpi, but that rules out win7 completely

Look at your memory usage and try to figure out if you are paging to disk. Win 7 uses a lot more memory and I suspect that's what's limiting you.

You'd be better served running a slimmed down linux kernel.

No amount of Win7 service tweaking is going to be worth the time on that hardware platform.

Yeah, XP was designed for the users, whereas win7 was designed for cia and hardware vendors...

I still think that it should at least run nearly as fast as on xp. I mean the decoder is just a simple process with lot of context switching, obviously the win7 kernel has a bad thread managment...

The only thing i can think of is that either the controll of the overlay interface of the gfx-driver is fubar, or something is amiss with the processor handling.

That means i gonna make a test with "null" output and see if the load decreases, and also search a way how to force the quantum resolution down to the minimum and see if it helps.
