Arizona receives heavy snowfall

not entirely true... Sedona, AZ got hammered all day today (I am here) and we are only at about 4500 feet.

I hope the interstates open back up by Tuesday... I thought it was rather weird that up in Illinois and such, it was in the 70's, and down in AZ, it was in the 30's and snowing. Odd winter, for sure!

I've been asleep all day really... the only time I can sleep is under heavy rainfall. Other days I'm pretty wide awake, and alert.

We got a little bit of snow here in central California at around 650 feet in elevation. That's surprisingly low.

Ahhh, but snow and cold in Arizona, while we have 80 degrees in Minnesota IS weird! Poles have shifted some, that would be one possibility. We can now switch our state names around a little bit. We are now Minnezona, and you are Arisnowta!

I was there too. I was the third vehicle back from where they shut down the I17, and ther is no way in hell there was enough snow......in Sadona..... To cause a closure. ADOT is just retarded, and so are people who think this is DOOM!

Just curious... where did they send all the poor saps stuck on I-17 once they closed the roads? Did you guys have to take backroads? If so, that really sucks. 89A wouldn't have been much of a picnic in all that snow.

Get this.

We called 511 to get the scoop on the driving conditions before we left Phoenix, I17 was open per info on 511. We rolled out, crossed under the first giant reader board for road conditions that you pass in Black Canyon City, and it read "winter driving conditions". We get all the way to the rest stop area above Sedona, the next reader board now says I17 closed. As I drove by the guys flagging us back south, I asked "What the hell...?". And the jackass said

"there are weather signs on the I17 all the way from Phoenix. You should have read them."

So stupid, I couldn't even answer.

That really sucks. What did you do? Take 179? Ugh, this crap better be cleared up by Tuesday. I'm planning to head out of town, via I-17 to I-40.

I've dealt with interstate closures in other states (like OK and MO) and they are never really all that nice.

Modern educational system

It's not abnormal for snow in northern AZ, it happens pretty much every year. Now if there was two feet of snow in southern AZ it might be kinda strange. I've lived in southern AZ all my life and I've only seen it snow a few times and it was only an inch or so at the most. In short there hasn't been anything abnormal here, some pole shift, or anything doom related.

NO, it is NOT weird. READ the posts in this thread by those of us that live here in Arizona........IT ALWAYS SNOWS 2 TO 4 FEET IN NORTHERN ARIZONA EVERY YEAR.

....now if we were to get a few inches of snow in Southern Arizona, THAT would be weird.

Read it again: it ALWAYS snows in northern Arizona.....2 to 4 feet.

I've lived in Tucson for 10 years and seen it SNOW twice now in March/April and that's here in Tucson!

The snow you're talking about today is all up north. This is not unusual really.

Hi everyone from AZ.

It's a little cool in Phoenix but nothing that unusual for this time of year. We have had one hell of a mild winter with temps already getting into the mid 80's.

I am always amazed by the amount of people that don't realize Northern Arizona is high country and it snows there EVERY year.

Good point. For those who expect a pole shift soon - I don't know what to think about that, really, so no offense, just lack of info - I hear if you see seashells in the dirt, you're not high up enough. I lived in AZ a long time and am not too far away from the border now, and we're getting hammered with snow and wind, but I live just about at 8,00 ft. altitude, and there are no seashells in the dirt around here. However, there are lots of 'dormant' volcanoes all over this area, as there are all over north AZ.....

The Southwest is never easy to predict. The weather has been squirrely for as long as I can remember, particularly in higher altitudes. And I-40 is one of the worst places at least till middle of May! I am surprised to hear about Chicago. That's one of the coldest damned places to spend a winter I've ever seen.
