Such episodes release about 10^30 to 10^35 watts for about a second, or up to millions of times more energy than our Sun. For a tenth of a second, the giant flare on SGR 1806-20 unleashed energy at a rate of about 10^40 watts. The total energy produced was more than the Sun emits in 150,000 years. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12781013 The EQ was the day before the flash Welcome to club .. All the particles do not travel the same speed, but when you say "whole day" you make my day .. SGR 1806-20 is located about 14.5 kiloparsecs (50,000 light-years) from Earth on the far side of our Milky Way galaxy in the constellation of Sagittarius. It has a diameter of no more than 20 kilometres (12 mi) and rotates on its axis every 7.5 seconds (30,000 km/h rotation speed at the surface). As of 2007, SGR 1806-20 is the most magnetized object ever perceived by humankind, with a magnetic field over 1015 gauss (1011 tesla) in intensity[1] (compared to the Sun's 1–5 gauss). "Scientists have detected a flash of light from across the Galaxy so powerful that it bounced off the Moon and lit up the Earth's upper atmosphere. " So, the bounce of this flash off the moon lit up the atmosphere, but nothing about an Earth direct hit from the flash? If it was this dramatic, I would think a direct hit would have been detectable on video cameras that were running and had a view of the sky. And since they say the reflection bounced off the moon, and lit up the atmosphere, the moon should have gotten that much brighter, or, lit up a part of the moon if it was in crescent, for the part of the world the reflection hit. But then again, I am sure we were not observing the moon when this happened. |

So very possible influences from massive jet bar from our galaxy what is pointed directly to out solar sister can effect us to .. Analyzing the velocities of stars in their study, the team was able to confirm that the Milky Way’s central bulge does contain a massive bar, with one end nearly pointed right at our solar system Links of original source here .. Astronomers know them as blazars and each of them harbors a supermassive black hole and jets emanating in opposite directions from near its poles. These sources are unique evidence of the most extreme speeds and energies known in the extreme Universe. The blazar's jet is pointing in the general direction of the Earth. Only one blazar would be enough to endanger our existence so it is good that none of them is located too close to our planet Earth. Links of original source here .. Material being drawn into the black hole forms a spinning disk called an accretion disk. Powerful jets of charged particles are ejected at high speeds along the poles of accretion disks. When these jets happen to be aimed nearly toward the Earth, the objects are called blazars. Their measurements showed that features in the blazar jets were moving at apparent speeds more than 25 times greater than that of light. This phenomenon, called superluminal motion, is not real, but rather is an illusion caused by the fact that the material in the jet is moving at nearly the speed of light almost directly toward the observer. Because the jet features are moving toward Earth at almost the same speed as the radio waves they emit, they can appear to move across the sky at faster-than-light speeds. Scientists can correct for this geometrical effect to calculate a lower limit to the true speed of the features. "We typically see apparent speeds in blazar jets that are about five times the speed of light, and that corresponds to a true speed of more than 98 percent of light speed," Piner said. "Now, based on independent confirmation by two groups of astronomers, we see these three blazars with apparent speeds greater than 25 times that of light," Piner added. That apparent speed, the scientists said, corresponds to a true speed of greater than 99.9 percent of light speed, which is 186,282 miles per second. [link to en.wikipedia.org] [link to en.wikipedia.org] SGR 1806-20 On December 27, 2004, the radiation from an explosion on the surface of SGR 1806-20 reached Earth.[2] In terms of gamma rays, the burst had an absolute magnitude around −291. It was the brightest event known to have been sighted on this planet from an origin outside our solar system. The gamma rays struck the ionosphere and created more ionization, which briefly expanded the ionosphere. The magnetar released more energy in one-tenth of a second (1.3×1039 J) than our sun has released in 100,000 years (4×1026 W × 3.2×1012 s = 1.3×1039 J). Such a burst is thought to be the largest explosion observed by humans in the galaxy since the SN 1604 supernova observed by Johannes Kepler in 1604. A similar blast within 3 parsecs (10 light years) of Earth would destroy the ozone layer and would be similar in effect to a 12 kt of TNT (50 TJ) nuclear blast at 7.5 km. After all that time traveling through space, the light from each explosion arrived within two days of each other in the skies over planet Earth. What a joy to see them both in their final glory. Supernova 2012 aw has been getting most of the attention lately, because it was discovered in a bright galaxy not far from the planet Mars in Leo. Most supernovae are caught on the rise to maximum light. This one was no exception. 2012 aw was first spotted at 15th magnitude (dim!) by Paolo Fagotti and Alessandro Dimai of the Italian Supernovae Search Project, and independently by Jure Skvarc (Crni Vrh Observatory, Slovenia) on March 16. A day later it rose to 13th magnitude which put it within range of many amateur telescopes. Today March 21, the supernova still hovers at around 13th magnitude, though it’s uncertain if it will brighten further or plateau.
