Bread and becquerels : a year of living dangerously
Nuclear disaster has turned family routine on its head

By GIANNI SIMONE

" ..... I began to suspect something was wrong when I heard about groups of parents who were organizing in the Kanto region to put pressure on the government and local authorities to come clean about the true extent of radioactive contamination from the accident. ... " .

" ... Looking back at the life my family used to lead before that fateful Friday afternoon — when the earthquake ruined the pizza party I was enjoying with friends — it's frightening how much it has changed.

For one thing, there's my daily diet. All of a sudden spinach and other risky foods are out, while apples are in. We have also added apple pectin to our diet because it helps sweep out radioactive dust particles from the intestines (apparently it was used extensively after the Chernobyl disaster).

We now know stuff we did not really care about before. We feel like last year we took a crash course in science (e.g. cesium, strontium and plutonium's half-lives, and their effects of the human body), technology (how to use and read a Geiger counter) and history (how the triad of national government, bureaucracy and industry ruthlessly imposed nuclear energy as the fuel source of choice, and later launched a wide-ranging construction program that over the years has turned Japan into the world's third nuclear power).

Indeed, keeping out of reach of the long arms of nuclear death, or even trying to limit the damage, is a 24/7 job. Wearing masks and brushing our clothes after coming home have become as natural as washing our hands or taking a shower..... " .

More shocking disclosure in the story

Powerful inland quake in metro area could claim 9,700 lives in Tokyo

A powerful inland earthquake in the Tokyo metropolitan area could claim the lives of up to 9,700 people in the capital, according to an estimate made by the Tokyo Disaster Prevention Council.

Furthermore, the council anticipates that up to 300,000 buildings, or around 10 percent of all structures in Tokyo, will collapse or be burned down by quake-triggered fires.

The estimate has prompted the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to launch efforts to work out an outline of revisions to its regional disaster prevention plan by September.

The Tokyo Disaster Prevention Council had been reviewing its estimate of damage to be caused by a massive Tokyo inland temblor since the March 11, 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. It is the first time in six years that Tokyo's estimate of damage has been revised.

The council made its estimate of damage that will likely be caused by four types of Tokyo inland earthquakes -- a magnitude-7.3 earthquake in northern Tokyo Bay, a magnitude-7.3 quake in the Tama district of western Tokyo, a magnitude-8.2 ocean trench-based temblor and a magnitude-7.4 quake triggered by the Tachikawa fault in western Tokyo......

The latest Sports Trends in Japan : Radioactive Walks !!

Professor Yukio Hayakawa Takes a "Radioactive Walk" In Abiko City and Kashiwa City in Chiba

The Gunma University professor took a walk in part of Abiko City and Kashiwa City, in the so-called "Tokatsu area" in the northwest corner of Chiba Prefecture with elevated radiation levels.

He says there is a statistically significant difference between the radiation levels on the ground levels and the levels at 1 meter off the ground, with the levels at 1 meter off the ground 20 to 30% less than at the ground levels.

The radiation levels of "black dust" he found along the way (in microsievert/hour):

Only Two Thermocouples Remaining to Measure Reactor 2 Pressure Vessel Temperature ?

TEPCO's "Status of TEPCO's Nuclear Power Stations after the Tohoku-Chihou-Taiheiyou-Oki Earthquake (Daily Report as of 3:00 pm, April 19)" states :

On April 18, we evaluated the reliability of the thermometer (RPV bottom head 135°) which was monitored for reference based on safety regulations 138 through direct current resistive measurement.

We evaluated the thermometer broken down based on the increase in direct current resistance. No large swings confirmed at other thermometers, monitoring posts, and PCV gas management system indicators.

We will continue monitoring PCV temperature by thermometers (RPV bottom upper head 270° and RPV upper skirt junction 135° . ..... “ .

Fault under nuclear plant feared active / Doubt cast on reactivation of Tsuruga plant
The Yomiuri Shimbun

A panel of the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) has suggested that faults beneath the Tsuruga nuclear power plant in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture, may be active--potentially putting the plant in violation of the government's criterion that prohibits building nuclear reactors above active faults.

NISA, which is examining earthquake-resistance capabilities of nuclear power plants, released Tuesday the results of the hearing panel's inspection of the plant of the Japan Atomic Power Co. (JAPC)

The burden is now on JAPC to prove the faults are not active. The hurdle for reactivating the reactors at the Tsuruga plant has thus become extremely high.

What the NISA panel sees as problematic are faults in zones of crushed rock left fragile by past earthquakes.

There are about 160 such crushed-rock zones on the plant's premises, including spots just below its Nos. 1 and 2 reactors.

Last Year's Green Tea from Tokyo Found with 210 Bq/kg of Radioactive Cesium (by the Old Testing Method)
The number is below the provisional safety limit of 500 becquerels/kg that was in effect till April 1 this year, and would be above the new safety limit of 100 becquerels/kg if the testing method for green tea remained the same.

Well it didn't .
Starting April 1, 2012, you only test green tea after it's brewed, and test the liquid. If that tests less than 10 becquerels/kg, it is supposed to be "safe" as far as the regulation goes.

But Security Tokyo, a private entity that has been conducting the very precise, professional measuring of radioactive materials using the calibrated germanium semiconductor detector, is testing the green tea ("Sayama-cha") made in Tokyo last year the old way - measuring the dry leaves.

From Security Tokyo's tweet (4/28/2012) : ..... “ .

Crowd-Funding Your Way Out of High-Radiation Area in Japan

One of the readers of this blog is trying a unique way out of the high-radiation area in Chiba Prefecture : Crowd funding.

.... Families with children in the areas most affected by radiation from the nuclear accident often cite "money" as one of their main reasons for not moving out of the areas. Well here's a way, thanks to the net ....

* * * * * * *

All this ties in the bigger picture :

- over 7,900 radioactive rods under the same roof and in the same general cooling pool just 50 meters away from reactor 4 And from the Pacific ocean :

Thread: 7,900 Radioactive Rods ready to enter the Pacific ! Ambassador : " Fate of Japan and the whole world depends on NO. 4 reactor "

- the decision by the US government to intervene into the Japanese crises , an act that speaks Volumes about the situation And the Japanese Establishment capabilities :

- the Worry we live under now that we became Nuclear Astute :

Cesium pushing wild plants off menu

The Yomiuri Shimbun

Many local governments are calling on producers and harvesters of edible wild plants to refrain from shipping their products after a number of them were found to contain levels of radioactive cesium that exceed state limits.

Some of these plants are now at the height of their picking season, but citizens are also being urged not to gather the plants in certain areas affected by cesium discharged into the environment by the accident at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant in March 2011.....

... and on top now they are running out of non-radioactive Soil !

[link to www.asahi.com]

A serious shortage of soil and subsequent price increases are delaying efforts to rebuild the disaster-hit Tohoku region and prolonging the misery of survivors who are desperately trying to resume normal lives.....

Not only do we have to worry about the damage done from the initial contamination (Alaskan salmon, dairy from the Pacific NW ect..) but it's now seeming like a game over situation if that fuel pool at the one reactor runs dry.
I've quit consuming dairy because of the danger of Strontium contamination and now only eat local caught fresh water fish.
I buy powdered milk and only use it when required for cooking.

Chernobyl taught us a lesson on how wide spread contamination can become and this incident has been 100 times worse.

Fukushima farmers pray for cesium-free rice

By YURI KAGEYAMA

AP

FUKUSHIMA — Last year's crop is still sitting in storage and deemed unsafe to consume, but Toraaki Ogata is busy planting rows of seedlings at his rice paddies in the city of Fukushima, continuing his family's proud, six-generation history of farming and praying he will be able to sell this autumn's harvest.

...In April, the government tightened limits on radiation in food produce to 100 becquerels per kilogram from the 500 becquerels maximum it imposed last March. The threshold is even lower for milk, baby food and drinking water....

.... A handful of farmers have given up on growing rice altogether, with some switching to flower production — a sector that doesn't require radiation checks. Others are suing Tokyo Electric Power Co. for damages arising from the nuclear crisis.

One farmer, Shoichi Watanabe, said he feels angry he even has to worry about the effects of radiation on his crops.

"See how still this place now is?" he asked, pointing to fallow paddies. "We would not be going through all this suffering if only Tepco had done its job correctly." .... more ...

Kyoto is not without danger, as it is located downwind from the "Nuclear Ginza" (including Ooi Nuclear Power Plant and Monju) in Fukui Prefecture. For that matter, nowhere in Japan seems safe from a nuclear accident.

fukushima had 1760 tons of nuclear cores.

[link to ex-skf.blogspot.ca]

In a recent issue of New Scientist, Fred Pearce offered a handy step-by-step guide on how to take apart a nuclear reactor.

There are thousands of tons of radioactive material to deal with — not just the spent fuel rods, but also various materials that have picked up lower levels of radioactivity.

That includes, potentially, the reactor vessel, the fuel-rod casings, various bits of scrap metal and even old clothing.
That waste can’t just be carted off to regular landfills; it needs to be disposed of properly. (Here’s a graphic breaking down the various types of waste.) .... more ....

(What Kind of Joke Is This?) Japanese Mainstream Media Report on June 16 Protest Against Ooi Restart, Pretend As If 11,000-Strong Protest on June 15 Never Happened

They must be feeling safe to report, because the scale of the protest was much smaller in the morning of June 16. 300 to 400 people showed up in the rain to protest the ministerial meeting that PM Noda was having at that time.

The Japanese mainstream media show no embarrassment for not having reported anything at all on the June 15 protest of 11,000 people. None of them even say there was a protest on June 15.

Who are they kidding? Majority of Japanese people whose sources of news are still traditional newspapers and TV, and/or who would rather not hear anything combative like a protest against a government policy .... " .. more ...

So we've seen in the recent past a Japanese butcher changing labels to sell his radioactive meat , Japanese scrap metal companies seling radioactive steel to China by over 2,000 tones , the Japanese government hick-ups in reporting and handling the disaster , the USA interveening forcing the shut-down of all reactors and unsatisafactory applyed science here , and Then I am recalling the 7,900 radioactive rods still UNSECURED ! :

#Radioactive Japan: Tsukuba City, Ibaraki's Official Radiation Test for Food Showed Only One-Third of What Was Actually In the Food (Barley)
, Says a Citizens' Group

In April this year, a citizen volunteer group in Tsukuba City in Ibaraki Prefecture set up "Ibaraki Citizens Radioactivity Measuring Station" to test food and soil for radioactive materials (iodine, cesium).

The group uses AT1320A by ATOMTEX (Belarus) with an NaI scintillation survey meter.

The group says over 100 Bq/kg of radioactive cesium was detected from the barley harvested in 2011, using their detector. From the same barley, Tsukuba City had only detected 35 Bq/kg.

Tsukuba City uses Hitachi NaI scintillation survey meter, according to the city's website. (The new safety limit for radioactive cesium is 100 Bq/kg.)

So why the huge difference?

It turned out that the city's measurement time was too short, and the software for the detector was not updated.

When the city lengthened the measurement time and did the software upgrade, the city's detector found 115 Bq/kg of radioactive cesium.

What a surprise .

But the Root of the Evil is in the Numbers : no more than 200,000 Japanese marched in their Already Radioactive Streets for a Nuclear-Free Japan !~!! NO WONDER the Japanese GovernMent has the balls to Re-Start the Reactors !! WHAT ?? you say ... WTH did Change in Japan to warant Safe re-starts ?? Nada ! So what's this , Harakiri ??

Just How did the Japanese found themselves into the Second World War , nuked twiced , let the Nukers set foot and military bases on the Nipon land , work hard and live in Cubicles , and now irradiated by the product of their scientists/politicians decisions to place nuclear reactors near Known Active Fault lines ?? Practice ?!

Did Tokyo Metropolitan Government "Create" the Hot Spots in Mizumoto Park in Katsushika, Tokyo?

That's what it seems like, if the tweet by Ms. Ayako Ishikawa, the head of the citizens' group "Protect children in Koto-ku", is correct. She tweeted :

About the hot spots in Mizumoto Park, we asked the Metropolitan Bureau of Environment and of Construction why the radiation levels at 1 meter off the ground exceeded 1 microsievert/hour.

It was the case of mismanagement of the facility. They piled up the sludge from the side drains after cleaning the drains [on to the particular areas], resulting in high radiation.

According to Ms. Ishikawa, it seems the park routinely removes the sludge from the side drains as part of the park maintenance and dump the sludge onto the ground nearby, usually in shrubs and under the trees.
The practice is to prevent the parking lot from being flooded in heavy rains from clogged-up side drains.

If that's the case, the Tokyo Metropolitan government has spread the radiation contamination and created new hot spots in the park..... more ....

bump

pin request!

 Quoting: ExpertOfSound

Indeed , a new worry to their lives well deserves a Pin , after all they show us the future because over 7,900 radioactive rods droping into the Pacific will put us on the .... star map !

But wait , what do We have to show for ?
See the girl in blue shirt in the picture ? That's the hand we extend to our Japanese sisters and brothers :
