I also live in California now. It is terrible here. I was a cook with over 8 years of experience and the fact that I have not worked in the industry for 2 years means my resume might as well go directly in their trash. I made Pizzas for over three years at extremely high volume with extreme attention to food cost and quality and they think because I did not do this exactly yesterday that it means I am some sort of idiot that can't measure cheese properly anymore.

I'll self disclose some in fairness re my story.

We left CA for spouses job in Northeast in 2007 and it has been a pretty bitter experience basically due to my completely foolish expectations (e.g. from one income to two - I had worked while she sent to school and thought we'd be on easy street once she had a job).

FYI both in our 40's (her mid me now late), both college grads (her phd me not), and with 3 kids.

The kicker is we left a Norcal City (800K pop) for (don't ask why) rural NE (8,000 pop) which was also a HUGE culture shocking mistake. Part of the lure was jobs for both of us on which her employer failed to deliver.

It took me three + years here to equal my final year's salary in CA and I had to drive all over the place from Canada to Connecticut. Relocating across country without relatives was, in hind-sight, not just stupid - it was REALLY STUPID.

The reason I posted to your thread is I keep thinking about returning to CA (I admit that this thought is primarily out of desparation) but it sounds like a delusion when I read threads like yours and so that's why I asked for some more specifics. You don't have to reply because I already know the answer (i.e. you can't go home - scratch that make it give up trying to improve your situation because you never will).

That's because of the housing/construction bust. It's that way everywhere, even in Colorado, and virtually everywhere else except maybe North Dakota in the oil fields.

Mamnufacturing jobs have been sent overseas, construction is still way off... Not good. My HVAC stepson in Colorado is working part time at a Pizza Hut.

Even Wall Street has had layoffs.

I subscribe to a guy on utube who moved into his suv. Now he supports himself by working 5 hours a week.

I'm comfortable for now but I've put together a fall back plan to live in my suv also, if need be. It all keeps getting worse. Folks need to be looking down the road and cutting back, now. Don't wait till u lose your job before u cut back.
