Nothing like the typical transatlantic pissing contest to enliven a Sunday night.

A few facts. Europe gets to have the programs it does specifically because America's obscene military spending pays for the fact you don't spend nearly any money on your own defense. Without American intervention during the Second World War, western Europe would have fallen to a totalitarian regime. Whether Nazi or Soviet, you wouldn't have been in a position to make choices for yourselves.

Maybe you would have liked that, but if you read the history of how people lived under Stalin or Hitler, you'd have a different idea. Ask the Poles about either if you're curious for a side-by-side explanation compared to the problems America represents.

Now, America does nasty stuff around the world, but that's because we got stuck going into places where all the Europeans made a mess in their former colonies.

Libya: Italy
Syria: France
Iraq: England

We can go on and on, and I'm not pretending America acts in anything other than its own self-interest, like every other nation including Russia and China. Like an early poster said, this is the great game playing out, and wars by proxy have always been a part of that.

As far as the facts of this particular incident, I think it's a clever way to try to reinforce the rebels. It's obvious the west wants to destabilize and eliminate Assad's regime in Syria, and increasingly obvious the Brotherhood and CIA have some sort of operating agreement, which may very well go badly for both in the end. But I think it is about Iran, and about energy resources and control.

I don't blame Russia for standing up for itself for one minute, though I seriously doubt Putin or the West intend a hot war between their nations. No one is that crazy and nuclear war isn't on the agenda for anyone.

But regional influence is, and we'll see how it plays out. Politics is a nasty world, and there are no right parties. There are just winners and losers, and the losers get used. So you better not lose.

This one seems really odd to me, if Russia were delivering helicopters or heli parts it would just seem way more easy for them to fly over Georgia or the Caspian sea and Iran. I would think they could get this job done in an easier way. And if NATO were to bitch at them for going through Iraq or Turkey Russia could stop letting NATO use its railways to ship supplies to Afghanistan. Also, they're taking that big tanker right into waters that are absolutely teeming with military boats... anyone have any ideas as to what is really going on here...

You boys would crumble if you had to pay real $$ for your oil... what's left of your industry would be out compete, and joe smith couldn't drive his Chevy to work... you need war to prop up your bloated gasoline lifestyles...
