The straw buying was all facilitated and walked across the border by US Agents (the same ones who blew the whistle on this because it is a crime) without any search at the border. The cartels were told to leave the weapons at the crime scene so the media could hype up the crime wave (US Government sponsored terrorism) on the border. At that time the government was blaming loose gun laws in the US. So this wasn't an anti crime program...it was a false flag terror campaign...and has nothing to do with politics. It had everything to do with another shadow government psyop and now the pretend gov't is tring to cover it up. It in no way claims it to be anti-crime. It claims it to be a criminal operation.
