The Original Dawn Dish Detergent does kill the fleas, however, be careful about using it too much, it does strip the dogs skin of the necessary oils. As for keeping the fleas off, that's the million dollar question! LOL If you figure it out, please let us all know! |

I can't get the fleas to stay away. We do the flea comb at least 2 times a day, clean their beds daily, give them flea baths once a week (didn't want to start to irritate their skin from the harsh chemicals), etc. We even used a pill from the vet that the vet uses on her cats. Nothing is working. There is always a handful every day, no matter what we do. We're tired of using chemicals. I've even tried apple cider vinegar in their water. Nothing is working. |

OnTheFence, I know what you mean about chemicals. When one of my dogs was diagnosed with Lymphatic Cancer, I went to a modified BARF diet, stopped feeding him commercial foods and treats. It helped prolong his life almost a year, but alas he succumbed to the cancer. It will be a year next month. Anyhow, I apply REVOLUTION Spot On Treatments on my dogs now, it helps with ear mites, intestinal worms, ticks, fleas and heartworm. I hate giving it to them but it's either that or a flea infested house and pets. I like it a little better than Frontline and Advantage. If you take regular table salt and baking soda and sprinkle it on your carpets and furniture, leave it for a day if possible and then vaccum it up, it acts almost like DE (Diatomaceous Earth). Only problem with both is that you have to try not to make a dust cloud as it will harm your lungs and that of your cats/dogs. I'm still looking for a viable and safe solution to killing fleas. Good luck in your battle. |

To repel them we use a concentrated cedar oil (diluted), works better than most sprays and repels bugs on plants but you have to use it sparingly as the oil can suffocate the plant if applied to liberally. We use it on ourselves as well |

Frontline seems to work for us. YOu know about Frontline, right? You just put a dab of it on the cat's shoulders blades where s/he can't lick it. I can't claim it's completely non-toxic, but its action is to inhibit some chemical process central to flea metabolism, NOT cat metabolism. So I believe it's less toxic than flea shampoos and sprays which are plain old poison. You have to kill eggs too which might entail using some strong poison on the cat bedding, your house's carpets, your own bedding, furniture, etc. After treating them you can wash them to get rid of poison residues. I know. It's a lot of work. NEVER use a bomb! Nasty stuff. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 18367637 United States 06/21/2012 09:26 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | For those of you who say you have used your solutions on dogs - do you think they will also be affective, and safe, for cats? None of the Frontline and similar products have worked. A pill that the vet herself uses on her cats doesn't work ... none of the flea-specific sprays work ... none of the flea shampoos work ... Everything seems to decrease the numbers, but never gets rid of them. The boys are isolated and their "bedding" is just towels that I change out daily. They are not near carpets and the place they are in is frequently cleaned and has been sprayed. I hate to constantly use different chemicals on and around them ... might end up doing harm to their system. I guess we'll try a Dawn bath this weekend. Couldn't hurt. |

I spray around the dog's bedding, the sofa, carpets, etc. and fleas disappear. Also, wintergreen essential oil is said to be good. For those who don't know, Listerine sprayed around doors, windows, patios, etc. helps repel mosquitos. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 16561788 United States 06/21/2012 09:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have a cat and he came with 2 fleas. I bought a flea collar. In a week, we had 2 million fleas. I used Skin So Soft on the cat, flea shampoo, flea dip, flea powder, Frontline, and every damn thing I could think of, includign borax and salt in the carpet. Nothing worked. I was about to bomb the house and get rid of the cat. Until... I got Sargent's Gold Flea and Tick Spray for dogs. I sprayed every inch of carpet, gave the cat a couple more flea baths and I have never had a problem since. It is the only flea product I have ever tried that actually does what it says on the can. |
