Secondly,I agree with you.Lincoln's main concern was saving the Union, not freeing the slaves. |

Duck User ID: 951395 United States 04/23/2010 08:45 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It's true. Abraham Lincoln was concerned about the civil war in this order: the split between the North and the South, the decerease in profit from the southern agriculture, and then the slaves, last of all. He was a good man, but he shouldn't be on the list. |
Jessica6 User ID: 951323 Canada 04/23/2010 09:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Note that "zygotic personhood" (the idea that a fertilized egg is a person) is a recent concept. For example, before 1869, the Catholic church believed that the embryo was not a person until it was 40 days old. (Aristotle agreed with this 40-day threshold.) Thus, the church did not believe a human had a soul until day 40. Pope Innocent III in 1211 determined that the time of ensoulment was anywhere from 12 to 16 weeks. Quoting: TruthTellerHmmm... That's around that time that the odds of miscarriage in a pregnancy drop to less than 5%. Never knew about that 40-day threshold before - very interesting. I don't think Mother Teresa should be on there - especially after reading Christopher Hitchens' "Missionary Position" So who should be in her place? Smedley Butler. He exposed an attempted Fascist coup on the White House and later penned the booklet "War is a Racket". AutonomousCommunity User ID: 1448981 United States 06/30/2011 03:45 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In the Peoria speech, Lincoln said that slavery was wrong, Foner says, and then admitted that he didn't know what should be done about it, even contemplating "free[ing] all the slaves, and send[ing] them to Liberia — to their own native land." "Lincoln is thinking through his own position on slavery," says Foner. "[This speech] really epitomizes his views into the Civil War. Slavery ought to be abolished — but he doesn't really know how to do it. Like Henry Clay, Lincoln also supported repealing slavery gradually — and possibly compensating slave owners for their losses after slaves were freed." [link to www.npr.org] "I add a word which was not in the verbal conversation. In telling this tale I attempt no compliment to my own sagacity. I claim not to have controlled events, but confess plainly that events have controlled me. Now, at the end of three years struggle the nation's condition is not what either party, or any man devised, or expected. God alone can claim it. Whither it is tending seems plain. If God now wills the removal of a great wrong, and wills also that we of the North as well as you of the South, shall pay fairly for our complicity in that wrong, impartial history will find therein new cause to attest and revere the justice and goodness of God. Yours truly, A. Lincoln" [link to showcase.netins.net] |
