Yeah, I know some people don't mind losing the tooth. I guess I have attachments to myself, lol. I'm surprised that the feedback is 'not painful' so far. ------ |

All dental conspiracies welcome. ------ no not worse. you don't feel a thing. yes, It's bit more annoying. with a good dentist you'll be fine and afterwards you'll be happy that you didn't lose a tooth. I have had two root canals. If there is any sign of infection you may be given antibiotics and sent away again. I am sure you have probably had the pain already to need one. Once I had a tiny bit of pain while drilling the tooth and the dentist put in a temporary filling and I went back week later and it was fine. It may seem alarming but the dentist uses what looks like a pin to clean the canal out. At this stage they may take an xray, to check it is all cleared out. Then they fill it with strips of plastic and when it is blocked up, they use the pin heated up a little to melt the plastic at the top and seal the hole. As you have 3 or 4 canal per tooth this takes time. My dentist usually gives me a temporary filling and some antibiotics for a week, just to make sure it is all okay before putting the filling in. So in summary painless but could take up to an hour. Final word of warning, all the drilling weakens the tooth and generally they only last about 10 years at which point you will need a crown. |

Quoting: BOWMAN Is this worse than having a cavity filled in pain/time wise? Are you glad with the way yours turned out? All dental conspiracies welcome. ------ I had my first root canal 3 months ago. The root canal wasn't painful at all. Having my jaw open for a long time was annoying. Dentist told me it would take about one hour, ended up taking 3 hours. Now the dentist wants to remove all my silver fillings I got as a child and fill them in with porcelain fillings. Happy I did get the root canal, I seem to have less headaches, and now I have a beautiful porcelain crown over it. |

Not sure I'm happy about having one but at least I still a tooth Really? Did they give you the laughing gas or something? I was under the impression that these procedures were painful. How long is a long while? An hour? No, they just numb the pain with something, just like when you have a cavity, maybe a bit stronger. it's not laughing gas ?? and you won't fell the needle. If you do feel it, ask for some more numbing medicine AND take the time you need. Stop them if you're not numb enough. They have to wait, canals are not cheap. Mine wasn't painful, and I did go to the dentist for a few days for the procedure. How long for one visit? Depends on your situation. My visits for half an hour, tops. I know dentist chair is very annoying but trust me, roots are NOT like what they used to be and don't ever listen to horror stories. ------ |

Thanks for your informative post. Well it has been a month since it has been diagnosed so I hope it's not infected. There's no pain there right now. Only a bit of sensitivity. I know I'm getting a crown because they said I would need it. And it's not cheap either. Almost 2 grand! ------ |

Small fillings are even worse, IMO. Depending how big the tooth is, it will take that amount of time - big tooth = longer sit. But it's just sitting there. You won't feel anything. Don't worry. Quoting: BRIEF Hey Brief Is there any alternative to save the tooth? ------ I hate root canals. Just yank the tooth, and go the route of having an implant put in It will last your whole life, will be stronger than a root canal, without the additional hassels JMHO Despite going to some of the best dentists in NYC, all of my root canals have gone bad in time, after much pain and expense Then there is the risk of needing an apicoectomy, which they never tell you about I have had to have two apicoectomies - which is where afer a root canal the very very tip of the root still has a re occurrence of the infection and they have to do surgery through the gum to clip off the end of the root. All this to try and save the root canal Painful, risky (there was the risk they could injure a nerve close to the root, and leave my mouth permanently numb) and pointless I ended up losing the teeth anyway Between the cost of the crown (they have soared with inflation), the risk of apicoectomy and the fact that it's still a dead tooth filled with poison, I now say no thank you The next root canal I needed, I just had them yank it. We then put in a titanium post and went the way of a permanent implant. I've replaced all the root canal teeth with implants at this point. I'm much happier. Thats just my experience, your mileage may vary - as they say Last Edited by Blue Zeus on 06/26/2012 02:09 PM |
