July 17, 2012 – ALASKA – Looking for relief from the heat over much of the Lower 48 states? Head to coastal Alaska where they are experiencing the coldest first half of July on record! Through the first 14 days of July, the average temperature in Anchorage was 53.1 degrees factoring in daily highs and lows, which makes it the coldest first half of the month on record according to the National Weather Service in Anchorage. Should this temperature trend continue, it could threaten the record for the coldest July ever, which occurred in 1920 and had an average temperature of 54.4 degrees. Typically this stretch of time is the warmest of the year. Instead, temperatures in the city of Anchorage are running 5.3 degrees below average. Some days have even turned out colder than cities on the Arctic Coast such as Barrow. On July 12th, the high temperature topped out at 54 degrees in Anchorage, while temperatures soared to 62 in Barrow (a whooping 15 degrees above average.)

Things are clearly... BAD.

My kids, husband, and I were headed to the mall today and the radio buzzed in a severe thunderstorm warning just south of us calling for 60+ mph winds. I looked on the radar and it showed a huge storm!

These storms are insane!

Let's hope for no power outages or fallen trees this time!
Looks like parts of Pennsylvania will get hit tonight. Those winds do some serious damage, as you well know.

US drought worsens, praying for rain
America's top agriculture official has admitted he gets on his knees and prays for an end to the country's worst drought in 50 years.

Tom Vilsack, who is President Barack Obama's Agriculture Secretary, told reporters at the White House: 'I get on my knees every day and I'm saying an extra prayer now.

'If I had a rain prayer or rain dance I could do, I would do it.'

Mr Vilsack had briefed Mr Obama on the scale of the crisis which seems certain to get worse before it gets better.

A swathe of the US has been declared a disaster zone after weeks of record-breaking temperatures and minimal rainfall.

There is no relief in sight with weather forecasters predicting it will be weeks before significant downpours arrive.

Twelve die as storms thrash China
AT least 12 people have died during torrential rainstorms which battered much of northern and southwestern China, state media reported.
In Beijing, strong winds blew off rooftops killing two people and injuring six others, the Beijing Emergency Medical Center told Xinhua news agency.
Heavy rain flooded roads and caused 223 flights to be cancelled in the capital, as the Beijing Meteorological Bureau issued its second-highest rainstorm alert for the first time since 2005.

July 22, 2012 – HORSESHOE BEND, Idaho — Authorities say U.S. Highway 95 has been reduced to one lane near Midvale as crews battle a 600-acre wildfire in western Idaho. Roadside Fire started early Friday and the cause has not yet been determined.

Flood waters peak in southeastern Austria after rain triggers mudslides, leaving 1 man dead
By The Associated Press July 22, 2012 VIENNA - Authorities say flood waters in southeastern Austria appear to have peaked after persistent rain led to mudslides which left one man dead.

On Saturday, rescue workers recovered the body of a man buried by a mudslide in the village of Thoerl the previous evening. The village of St. Lorenzen, also in Styria province, was hit early Saturday by a mudslide that swept away garages and cars.
