Have you been under a rock? It is widespread news that 75% of the US in a severe drought. Making headlines all over the MSM.

1. The electrical grid is not even comparable to that of India. Back in the day, we had some smart people design redundant systems, those systems are still in place today. They maybe old, but they still work perfectly. You ever wonder why the New York blackout or the San Diego blackout didn't cascade any further? Now you know.

2. India's power system is designed over an old British colonial system. India puts fancy new equipment in but they haven't upgraded their public utilities for so long, it's absolute fucking shit. Undersized wires because they're cheap, terrible insulation, horrid equipment, and the new equipment they install, they don't even understand themselves how it works. They need to hire some engineer from Europe or the States to do their new installations because they're clueless. If you ever been to India, you would understand. Blackouts are so common in India that almost every person has a damn generator. India spends very little money investing into roads, new utilities, sewers, etc. This disaster in India is only a small disaster that's coming upon them for neglecting everything else. They are horrible investors, they don't understand that investing into roads, businesses, utilities, etc would improve their own business. India is so corrupt, even the taxes that's supposed to go to these areas disappears into politicians pockets. You think Americans are greedy, you have no idea what greed is until you've been to India. You may think Indians are smart people, but in reality, they're hopelessly clueless and the biggest cheapskates you would ever meet. They also have a seriously hard time organizing their work force.

3. America is collapsing in on itself from overspending government that fucks everyone in the ass. Business wise, trade, manufacturing, the US and Canada will be just fine. Get rid of most of this government and watch business flourish once again as you see in most of the right to work states.

90% of the US electricity depends on a minimum level of inland river water. Go below this and..BLACKOUT!! NO FRIKKIN electricity!! If there is no coolant for the nuke reactors then there is NOTHING that can be done. NOTHING! I wish i was in the USA and I could open a nation wide chain of portable generator outlets! How does GENR8R R'Us sound

Isnt it Obamas job to get this situation in order. I mean all the flak Bush got for Kathrina but this drought is probably worse in its consequences.

Unfortunately, he is apparently trying...and I don't know if I like how it is playing out. I realize things need to be done, but I can think of other ways.

Reservoirs in areas of rainfall, aquaducts and pipelines to places that need it. Oh and a side benefit? People will be working to build this necessary infrastructure. If this drought is going to be long lasting...we need to make long lasting plans...the above move is a band-aid, not a fix.

In an oil economy, technology such as this always seems to just disappear.

Lets look at reality for a second:
1. The US can generate 4110 TWH.
2. The US consumes 3870 TWH.
3. We steal 0.030 TWH and swap 0.015 TWH with Canada.
4. 42% of US power generation is from coal.
5. Solar and Wind is just a liberal joke.


What does this mean? We have about 6 percent spare capacity. We buy another one percent from Canada.

Because we have spare capacity we don't have frequent outages like India. However - we don't have a lot of spare capacity and Obama is shutting down the coal-fired (42%) plants for CO2 reasons.

If we reelect Obama we will have blackouts like India, if we don't we won't.

That's not exactly true. The US Navy has actually played with the idea. Seawater actually has a lot of CO2 (fish are heavy breathers). If you use an iron catalyst about 70% methane and 30% short chain hydrocarbons is produced. Short chain hydrocarbons can be processed into fuel. If your power is free it may make sense to try generating fuel.

From the paper on the subject:
"But to make a jet fuel that is properly "green", the energy-intensive electrolysis that produces the hydrogen will need to use a carbon-neutral energy source; and the complex multi-step process will always consume significantly more energy than the fuel it produces could yield. In addition, each step in the process is likely to add cost and problems."

This is a gratuitous lie. Every one of these free/clean fuel ideas I've looked at have technical challenges or are inefficient (it takes more energy to make the fuel than is in the fuel). However I would love to be proven wrong and I will be... eventually.

If the Navy wanted to run their aircraft carrier reactors at 100% all the time they could probably make some fuel this way and it might kind of make sense. They have the reactor, and the sailors have free time...

If you have to pay for the power it is uneconomic.

This drought will only affect corn and subsidized products because you cannot grow these economically except on large swaths of land.

Any other produce can be grown quite profitably hydroponically or aeroponically. This is the future. EVERYWHERE will be able to grow.
