Advice on self hypnosis
So I've been trying to find some ways to relieve some stress and get my head together, and hypnosis was recommended as a good option to try. I thought I'd try some stuff myself rather than spending money on a hypnotherapist, but I'm running into a major roadblock.

Basically, the more I try to relax, the more tense I become. I get extremely restless and want to get up and move around the room. As soon as I stop trying to do the hypnosis, I can lay still just fine.

Anyone else ever tried this and had success? Any advice would be appreciated.

It's a natural part of the process, the key is to ignore every one of those signals to move. What is happening is that as you relax, with your body immobile, your brain is wondering if you are asleep, so it send out signals to see if you react. If you don't react, the brain thinks you're asleep, and begins to immobilise your body more. The result of this when you are sleeping, is sleep paralysis, which the body employs as a safety mechanism to stop you moving around.

So, resist the urge to move, or scratch. Concentrate only on your breathing. The urge will pass eventually.

Good luck.

Out of this ugliness may come,
Some day, so beautiful a flower,
That men will wonder at that hour,
Remembering smoke and flowerless slum,
And ask-glimpsing the agony
Of the slaves who wrestle to be free-
'But why were all the poets dumb?'
-William Montgomerie

So many gods, so many creeds,
So many paths that wind and wind,
While just the art of being kind
Is all the sad world needs.

You dont TRY to relax, its not an exercise.

You just lay there and accept what the bloke says.

What methods are you trying? (guided by audio, self guided, some visual/audio app thingy...)?

Laying there "trying to relax" can be quite frustrating if you are the type of person who has trouble relaxing.

Generally, the need for hypnosis stems from a need to make a subconscious change. If that change involves letting go of control issues, you'll end up in a vicious circle of frustration as you try to "let go". (Get it?)

I can recommend a few things if I know a little more about the process you're trying.
