Can anyone reccomend the best internet service? something secure, spying free, idiot-free, no hassles, cheap. the complete opposite of AOL really....

I use Netzero and I can only get dial up at 26400 on my lines 14.95 wih the 5 times faster.

I have had many......Aol>>sucks

You can get netzero free still I think but basic is 9.95 for dialup unlimited

I have had good luck with netzero but they all stink if you have to talk to service in India ha !

and am VERY HAPPY, especially considering the low price.

I've pretty much given up on worrying about internet intrusions; I figure somewhere, somehow- if someone wants to find out what I'm cruising, they will!! Every passing day we lose more and more of our privacy and except for temporary patches [or just shutting our entire lives down!] there's not really much we can do about it... there'll just be someone else coming along with another virus variation to torque our tolerance... and I'm not 'gonna pay through the nose to repeatedly update software for a sense of false security. So, let 'em snoop away! When they come knocking on my door is when I'll have the edge and THEN I'll take action.

Dial up ... Copper Net is a true $9.95/mo (or $100/yr prepay) basic dial up connection. Have connection points in most towns across the US that have a population of 5000 or higher.

If you want High Speed ... then it depends upon where you are.

SBC has been the most aggressive of the Baby Bells at pricing DSL service (but not all areas even in their service area are covered). Cable high speed can be REALLY fast ... but the speed tend to drop DRAMATICALLY when all the kids get home from school or in the early evening when families get on-line. {Pricing there is going to be from $25 to $70/mo depending upon your cable company and local competition.

Some rural areas now have fixed point "wireless" high speed connections (via a mini radio transmitter on your house pointing to a tall tower-structure somewhere). These seem to run about $35-$50/mo.

Verizon now has it's G3 wireless system up and running in some areas (mostly urban). About 128k download and about 40k upload for $70 to $80/mo if you want some mobility.

Get away from the DREAM stage ... which you laid out in your original post ... and decide what you really want. Maybe it is to NOT be on the internet at all??

Cable it the way to go if you can get it.

With regard to intrusions, folk can come knocking on your door but it's your choice whether you let them in or not.

Whatever you use, get good firewall, anti-v and anti-spy progs. If you're really paranoid then get penguin power and use 'nix for your OS.
