my niece was the first family member who got a degree , 7 yrs later she still lives at home with her parents making probably 10.50 an hour (bank teller) I moved out first week after I Graduated from High School.

here is my sincere advice for the OP,

ask around , ALL your friends, ALL your relatives, people you havent spoken to in decades.

Find the person who they know, ideally who they are friends with, who is the most successful in what ever it is that is the industry you want to work in.

Then, Ask them to introduce you to that person, and then, if possible, you become friends with that person.

If you are poor and have no connections,

GET READY to kiss a A LOT of ass.

I used to work in software and my well respected boss had a degree - in psychology. She got paid more $ than me cuz she had a higher degree. The whole "degree" thing is a scam the American people bought into, sadly to the tune of billions of dollars, mortgaging their own futures for empty promises and skipping memories and vacations all so Cindy Lou could go to Boston U.

I made the mistake, after graduating with a B.A. from a great school, of starting a family and staying home with the kids for 10 years. Then when it was time to go back to work, I made anOTHER mistake of getting into the nonprofit world. I figured I wouldn't get rich doing nonprofit work, but certainly I'd make more than the $9.40 I started at. After all, I knew nothing about nonprofit world when I started. Three years later, having researched and written grants, planned events, managed donor databases, and just about everything in between, and getting great performance reviews, I was making $10.03 an hour. I knew I couldn't survive, so I quit and went into business with a friend. Now a year and a half into the shop, we are doing better but STILL are not breaking even. Again, about $10 an hour. I'm in my mid 40s now, kids are getting older, and am AGAIN looking at restarting a career. I'm looking at getting into programming now, in hopes that I can make more when I'm up to speed. I'm scared, though, after years of going down bad paths. At least I can learn coding without going back to school. I wouldn't go back now - not worth it.

Wow sucks to be an american. I went to an american equivilent of a community college here in Australia for 1 year which made me a division 2 nurse, second to division 1 nurses. $23 an hour, time and a half weekends, double time public holidays. Today id my 7th day straight so that means TRIPPLE PAY....... $70 an hour. Now the cost of food and living is much higher here but it makes of very cheap online shopping from the US and even cheaper asian and american holidays. Our minimum wage is something like $12 or $14 an hour, im not exactly sure because other than illegal asians the majority of people make above minimum. My partner worked in a pizza store for cash under the table for $18 an hour tax free! Shit come here and get government unemployment payments, $400ish every 2 weeks then sell drugs or have a cash in hand job like half my town does and make more than us hard workers.

i got laid off from my job (electric motor repair and sales) after the company was sold and the new owner had a son my age who was currently working at verizon doing customer service. So of course he got my position and i lost my job. I've applied everywhere, even for minimum wage jobs that i'm qualified or over qualified for and i rarely hear shit back. It works both ways, i've heard people that are employed say "go out and get a job" yeah fuckers if it were that easy now a days, and then others that have been unemployed for a year or more, that honestly do understand how rough and depressing the job market is, at least in this state. Thursday i had a good 45 min interview with a friend who does sales for a roofing company. The job is delivering trailers to the job sites and taking the full trailers to the dump.towards the end he says "oh my son is coming in to try out the job first" i think he just graduated from college, and i'm pretty sure he didn't get a degree in transportation....anyways the point is You gotta do your best to stay positive and i guess try not to think about the fact that you may never get a good paying job. but all this bs is fking irritating and depressing.

I think the hardest part about trying to get a job in todays economic bullshit is seeing the ppl that totally fuck off on the job, steal time, and that sortta shit, and stay employed...when you and others you know would do just about anything and work the full shift. I personally know 2 people that work for Century link as phone techs, and they will drive their vans home, log onto their system network from home say at 7am and "clock on", leave the house at 9 then get home at 1, stay "on the clock" till 3:30 and get their 8 hours. And this job pays $34 an hour...Kinda like state workers "9-5 home by 2" lol. Okay i'm done bitching.
