Contaminated Mangoes are Recalled in 16 States as Cantaloupe-Caused Salmonella Outbreak Continues to Grow~UPDATE 9/1/12

Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Braenderup Infections Associated with Mangoes

A total of 105 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Braenderup have been reported from 16 states. The number of ill people identified in each state is as follows: California (80), Delaware (1), Hawaii (3), Idaho (1), Illinois (1), Louisiana (1), Maine (1), Michigan (1), Montana (1), Nebraska (1), New Jersey (1), New York (3), Oregon (1), Texas (2), Washington (6), and Wisconsin (1).

Among persons for whom information is available, illness onset dates range from July 3, 2012 to August 11, 2012. Ill persons range in age from less than 1 year to 86 years, with a median age of 30 years old. Fifty-four percent of ill persons are female. Among 69 persons with available information, 25 (36%) patients reported being hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

Illnesses that occurred after August 6, 2012, might not be reported yet due to the time it takes between when a person becomes ill and when the illness is reported.

The Canadian Fruit Inspection Agency has expanded its recall of “Daniella” brand mangos to include the entire country because of a Salmonella Braenderup contamination concern that has resulted in about a dozen illnesses. In addition, mangos are suspected in a similar Salmonella outbreak in California.

The mangos in Canada were sold between July 12 and up to and including Aug. 28. As of Wednesday morning, 22 people had become sick, with 17 of them being in the province of British Columbia and five in neighboring Alberta. The Canadian importer, Mex Y Can Trading Inc. of Mississauga, ON, has voluntarily recalled the affected mangos and the CFIA is monitoring the Canadian recall.

The Daniella-brand mangoes are distributed by North American Produce Sales.

The affected mangoes were sold as individual fruit or as a part of a multi-pack with a sticker bearing the brand Daniella and one of the following PLU numbers: 3114, 4051, 4311, 4584 or 4959.

Various retailers sold the mangoes between July 12 and up to and including August 29.

U.S. health officials say the number of people sickened with the strain of salmonella linked to cantaloupe from an Indiana farm has grown to 204 in 22 states.

At least 78 people have been hospitalized as a result of the infection caused by salmonella Typhimurium, and two deaths have been reported in Kentucky. Here's a list of the number of ill people identified by state, according to the Centers for Disease Control:

Since the last CDC update on Aug. 23, Florida joined the outbreak with one case. No additional deaths were reported beyond the two from Kentucky that were first announced when CDC first confirmed the outbreak was underway on Aug. 17.

The outbreak strain of S. Typhimurium was matched to cantaloupe collected from Owensville, IN-based Chamberlain Farms by investigators from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) during site visits on Aug. 14 to 16.

CDC says 52 percent of the ill for whom information is available have required hospitalization. For the 149 who've reported to CDC, illness onset dates range from July 7, 2012 to August 18, 2012. Ill persons range in age from less than 1 year to 100 years, with a median age of 50 years. Fifty-nine percent of ill persons are female.

i love mangoes so this caught my eye when i saw it on my news feed.

I don't know the specifics in this case, but I do know in Mexico, growers fertilize with sludge. Sludge is mostly sewage waste. It's sprayed in the air over the fields and the waste lands on the produce. It was done in the US in the 70's, I know for sure. I don't know if it's still done here now.

My son knew about this before I did--he works in a high-end produce market. He happens to be the one who loves mangoes and he almost purchased some, too. They were on sale, although I think these mangoes were from a different company.

Since the cantaloupe scare, I don't even go near them anymore.
It's never been a favorite fruit of mine, so it's no big deal.

This is nothing short of "food terrorism".

FDA Investigates Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Braenderup Infections Associated with Mangoes

FDA is advising consumers not to eat Daniella mangoes distributed by Splendid Products of Burlingame, California because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. This advice comes after Splendid Products announced a recall of this type of mango on August 29, 2012.

These mangoes were packed in Mexico, distributed by Splendid Products and sold between July 12, 2012 and August 29, 2012 at various stores throughout the United States. The mangoes were sold as individual fruit with the sticker brand “Daniella.” Each fruit was also marked with a small sticker with one of the following codes: 4051, 4959, 4311, 4584 or 3114. Consumers who have purchased these recalled mangoes should not eat them and should throw them away. Photos of the recalled mangoes are available.

I went into the store early in the morning and saw 3 workers pulling the mango's off the shelve right by the main door. I asked them if anything was wrong with the mango's ......

they replied ....No, we are just moving them to a different location.

So, I bought 4.

Read this morning about the recall and sure enough .....4051 was in the recalled batch!

Such dishonesty that could have cost a life or two or three or four!

Thanks, that would explain it. In Germany fertilizing vegetables and fruits with sludge is forbidden since about 20 years.

The answer is they can't, neither could the tomatoes last time round. But seeing as the hidden objective is to irradiate all fresh produce, therefore negating their healing powers in favor of Big Pharma's expensive alternatives, we have to scare the public first. Classic bullshit, you should be able to smell it by now.

That sounds so gross! As I'm typing this, my son is reading to me that most articles he is reading are pointing to contaminated water as the source.
