Alfalfa Hay Doubled In Price For Me This Year - Drought Makes Its Impact
I am an avid hay buyer and help arrange for other farmers to get their loads as well. Last year alfalfa hay averaged $195.00-$225.00 a ton when you buy as big of loads as we deal with. This year, becuse of the drought, very few people even have the hay to sell and what they do have is averaging $275.00-$365.00 a ton. Orchard grass is also sky rocketing. Last year $220.00 was common, this year it's averaging $400.00 a ton or more.

Nobody outside the agricultural world really knows what this means. The U.S. Has stopped sending its hay overseas for the most part...other countries have had droughts as well. Next year, if another drought follows, the cost of milk products and beef/goat/lamb/pork will probably be astronomical to offset feed prices for farmers. Between gas and feed, farmers re getting hit really hard.

When we consider how crops will impact us we often think only about what we eat. What happens when what we eat (meat animals) doesn't have anything to eat?

You're right, I hadn't thought about it in those terms. I know in our state, whos big crop is corn, the drought has all but ruined just about the entire state's crop.

It'll become more important when people can't eat. With Bernanke's recent 1.04 trillion printing the ag community started slaughtering everything they could because of the grain shortages so...for the time being, the shortage may not be as impactful.

Hay has been high for several years; there are fewer hay eating animals because of the price. Part of the cost of meat is the sell off of cattle because of the price of hay. Now not enough cattle in the market so a higher price for meat. Horses have suffered because of the same problem and the price for them is very low. We don't eat horses in this country.

Being a former farmer myself, I appreciate your comment. I grew alfalfa and when it is hard to come by, food quality drops. Shows weather is not good too.
