Mystery Google Device Appears in Small-Town Iowa

A closeup of the “Pluto Switch,” a mystery hardware device that landed on the edge of Iowa this past winter. Images: networking-forum.com

Photos of the mystery computing device appeared on the web in late February. Taken with a smartphone, they were a bit washed out and a little blurry in places, but you could easily read the name printed on the long, thin piece of hardware. “Pluto Switch,” the label said.

The images were posted by two men who said the device had unexpectedly turned up at a branch office in the tiny farmland town of Shelby, Iowa — population: 641 — and they were hoping someone could tell them what it was.

And the picture of it is stupid. Its just a pic of the back with the fan and power connection and a sticker that says pluto switch. Anyone could make up this story. wow, they are really running out of ideas for stories or something...lol.

Lame!

the more i read comments on GLP, i see more idiots everyday. First off, wired is a reputable source. Second, Google is known for data sniffing through public and private wi-fi signals, spying via location with smartphones, data collecting with ip addresses, and the list goes on. So seeing this is no surprise. And if half of you lames actually READ the whole article instead of looking at pictures, youll see what this is. If anyone here knew anything about networking, this a switch in which shouldnt exist in the open market. its relay is way advanced past cisco products. This goes back to my theory of big companies suppressing advanced technology.

Re: Mystery Google Device Appears in Small-Town Iowa
So they made their own switches, sending the designs to Asian manufacturers to produce for them with their own special connectors. Big deal, this has been done before 20 years ago with a lot of businesses, just that hardware costs dropped dramatically that everything became pretty much standardized until hardware costs went up again. This is why you can find so many useless gear from the early 90's that's hard to get running again because everything is non-standard. The same thing is just happening all over again. Building and designing your own gear has become cheap again.

I have heard of hidden rooms full of racks and racks of equipment in a normal looking phone closet or behind an unmarked door. I'm sure this one piece of equipment is but a drop in the bucket.

And you are "off base", that is 100-240 volts, 2.0 amp,
basically a universal power supply, could be to anything,
but looks like a computer cooling fan

Re: Mystery Google Device Appears in Small-Town Iowa
this is cool. you all need to read. there is no conspiracy here, just a piece of tech that a major internet backbone would need to keep its services running.

Would you have had the same reactions if it was called a GBP10S, instead of a pluto switch.
I see what the world don't show me.
