Anyone see see a strange "star" this morning | |
w8n4Yah User ID: 23892716 United Kingdom 09/16/2012 03:01 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Saw the same thing in the eastern sky about 2:30 am here in Florida, bigger and brighter than any other star in the sky and it did look super close. Headed to bed after that...glad to know I'm not the only one who saw it and thought it was strange! Most amazing swamp gas EVER!!...I will check tomorrow morning, maybe this was a fluke... It was probably the star that grants three wishes and I lost MY chance! live to serve; serve to live. |

sleeping_panther (OP) User ID: 23843852 United States 09/16/2012 03:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | yeah, There is one I see in the evening in the sw, same position every evening, and always appears to have color around it. I saw it last summer too. Its the consistent position that puzzles me. The one I saw this morning was an absolute first. Again, way bigger than the one in the evening. I really should re-learn my astronomy. I was honestly waiting for it to shoot off and zig zag across the sky. (yes the inner child defies my core logic many many times.) live to serve; serve to live. |

Quoting: djdandew1 Nope - Jupiter is usually visible for 9 months or more, at a time. This apparition began round about early July - rising just before the sky got bright in the morning. An experienced skywatcher, who knows where to look, could probably have spotted it in the pre-sunrise dawn sky, from late June. It's currently rising about 10pm-ish - and will come to opposition (due South at midnight) in early December. Then it'll gradually edge it's way west, over the next few months, finally becoming really difficult to pick out from the evening twilight when it gets too close to the Sun, just after sunset in late April. Early July, through to late April - that's 9 and a half months. It varies a bit from one year to the next, depending what time of year (brightness and duration of twilight).... the angle the Sun is rising and setting when Jupiter gets near to it... etc... 9 months is a good approximation in any given year. |

Seer777 Ride the wings of the mind User ID: 3018467 United States 09/16/2012 05:08 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I witnessed the beautiful alignment last night of Jupiter, Aldebaran, and Alnath around 1 am. Jupiter was in the middle, throwing off fiery red spikes of light. It was really beautiful. I watched it for sometime. Sirius and Venus rose together in the East around 5am PDT.
