It is against the law here in the states to distill hard liquor, you can make beer and wine.

I'm surprised it isn't mentioned more--but honestly--if the SHTF, what better way to survive than to have the supplies and tools to make and use a still.

You could then barter for all your needs and everyone would want to be your friend--as long as only you know how to operate it.

Look at WW I, WW II, Korea, Vietnam... and now, Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. etc. etc.

If you grow your own food and don't already do it, start learning to can that food. I recommend a water bath canner and a pressure canner. Pressure canner can process just about anything, but a water bath canner can be a lot more simple. Then you just need pint and quart jars and the two piece lids. Canning salt and vinegar is good to have on hand as well.

Really, canning is a skill that is good to know even if you're not a prepper and grow your own food. We do some mild prepping, but we try to grow a lot of our veggies and don't want to rely on a freezer (we've had one randomly die on us and lost stuff) to store them over the winter.

For a lot of people it isn't necessarily that we think some huge event will happen and we'll end up Mad Max style for years to come. A lot of it is that food prices are going nuts, you can't trust what is in food or drinks anymore. You don't know when fuel prices will finally get to the point of no return and you really won't be able to afford gas for your car to run to the store whenever you need one or two things. You don't know when LP will become too expensive so that people who use that to cook and heat their homes won't be able to afford it. If you live in an area where hunting is an option for you then having your firearms and ammo is just plain smart. Knowing how to preserve the seeds from your garden keeps it self-sufficient even if shit never does hit the fan.

So it isn't just the big shtf scenario, its the seemingly little stuff too.

Did anybody mention soap ? This is one of the first things you will miss if you didn't stock some.

It would also come in handy to be able to make your own diesel from used oil. There is a very useful site which explain everything about it, and gives also a lot of practical information about all sorts of stoves.

You don't need a Mad Max scenario to for there to be a need to be prepared. Think of an economic-financial collapse, like in 2008 but worse. What happened during the great depression, in 1929 and on ? Many people committed suicide, they were that desperate.

I have watched a few Doomsday Preppers documentaries on NatGeo and it was obvious those who had their own gardens and grew their own food felt much more safe and secure in the knowledge that, if ever there was a food shortage for any reason, they would be protected.

making soap is actually fairly easy i dont think there will
be a shortage but likely the price will rise.

i have seen several of those biodiesol how to vids and texts
and i lean more toward using gasoline engines converted to/running on ethanol,methane or woodgas.

used oil will become unavailable very quickly in a disaster/post tshtf scenario

Making soap is one of the easiest things to do.
Basically it's just mixing two things and cooking the mixture.

You are probably right about the used oil, but this situation might vary with the region or the country you are living in.

you dont need barrels, you need a WELL and a hand pump for it.
You need armor and you need vehicle traps and barriers to keep from being overrun my 4 by 4s. Also enough firefighting equiptment to keep from being burned out.
You also need someplace to stay that wont be penetrated by a 50 cal. Oh and thermal and night vision and periscopes so you dont get sniped

Another thing nobody seems to have thought about, but which came up recently in another thread: kefir.

Kefir is another one of those health foods which you should know how to make yourself.

I just came down with H Pylori- it is a bacteria from contaminated food or water..

it almost succeeded in shutting down my digestion system,caused heart problem,swollen intestines, excessive bloating, extreme burping,major constipation... I thought I was going to die! I got to where I couldn't even take a drink of water without the bacteria swelling up my whole stomach excessively and putting major pressure on my heart!

My advise is to have plenty of Meds on hand. Natural and man made..I tried to fight the pylori a natural way because I realized it was a contaminated drink that gave it to me but I didn't realize I needed a combination of Meds to even make it to where I could drink water again. I'm on an antibiotic (Cipro), an acid increase to aid in digestion, a gas reducer to reduce excessive bloating,and a laxative to keep from plugging up again..and I am still struggling to get better

I hardly ever get sick and this really got me bad..

so keep all kinds of Med supplies!

my understanding is that a lot of people get it..so stock up! Things like coconut oil, oil of oregano, colloidal silver,garlic, enchea,and golden-seal, turmeric,cinnamon and other natural Med cause you never know.

Also, a few tarps, some paracord and a few IBC tote tanks for impromptu rain collection, also an iphone app or pc app that can decode a weather fax, automated stations send a wealth of free info about weather, satellite images and prognostic info via shortwave, any cheap receiver and a computer can pick it up using a length of speaker wire between some trees.. could be helpful.

don't discount the value of having access to information, consider getting a cheap shortwave receiver (nothing fancy), and a FTA dish, for a less then 500.00 you will NOT be in the dark wondering what is going on when SHTF, and intelligence / information during a crisis is also valuable to others.
