SSI IS welfare. Federal program, state administered. Only eligible if you are under certain income limits and have a disability which prevents work, or over age 65. It comes with Medicaid (free health care, also a form of welfare - which also pays for prescriptions). If you begin drawing social security (NOT welfare) and it is over the SSI income limits, you will lose your Medicaid. They even give SSI to kids if family income is low enough. Currently, the monthly Federal amounts of SSI for adults is $698 per month to do nothing. I have heard that since Obama it is A LOT easier to get approved. Makes you automatically eligible for food stamps.
