Bar of soap in bed for leg cramps?
Here is something different than the VP debates and typical doom.

So, tonight I asked my nurse friend tonight for anything that would help with tendonitis in my calf. She said drink lots of water, eat bananas, and sleep with a bar of soap by your feet.
wtf

The following hypothesis was contributed by Derek H. Page and Hugh Smailes:

Several years ago, Ann Landers raised a provocative question in her column: does soap at the foot of the bed cure night-time leg cramps? The consensus in the medical community is no: there is no conceivable mechanism by which it could, so any relief derived from this procedure must be due to the placebo effect. In other words, it's all in the mind.

But if it is indeed a placebo effect, it's a remarkably strong one. Many people who have suffered for months, if not years, from painful, nocturnal cramps in their legs and feet have found immediate and long-lasting relief just by slipping a thin, innocent bar of soap beneath the sheets. Some even report relief although they were unaware that a bar of soap had been snuck into bed. Likewise, others whose cramps have mysteriously returned have been nonplussed until they later discover that their bars of soap have fallen from the bed.

I couldn't believe my friend actually suggested this, and i figured it would be some sort of placebo effect. I also couldn't believe i actually found websites referring to this.

Allow me to be the first one to call it:

my mom is not inclined to this kind of thing but she had leg cramps for over a year- heard about this and tried it out of desperation and it worked 1st time.

she still can't believe it and no one suggests any plausible reason for it to work.
worked for her though.

My thoughts?

That soap is cheap and calling B.S. before you try it is a sign that you're afraid that others will attack you for presenting an unconventional idea.

Don't get me wrong, on GLP they will, but face it, some people will attack anyone for anything.

Try it and see.

Yes its a well known fact just like the existance of black holes.
You dont have to go into a black hole to know they exist and likewise you dont have to know how this works to know that it does work.

When I have leg cramps I punch my leg hard. You have to show these body parts whose boss. I used to beat the hell out of my left arm because my left hand would get uppity and try to choke me while I slept.

Re: Bar of soap in bed for leg cramps?
One possibility...
There are nerve endings in your feet that "attach" to every organ and part of your body.

Check out reflexology... treating ailments by massaging the proper places on your feet. Or hold your nose and have someone rub some Lavender oil where your toes join the bottom of your foot... you will smell it instantly!

Maybe there is something in soap... the fats/oils or the alkalinity that you readily absorb through proximity, which helps with the cramps.

Good to know, no matter how it works! Been getting them lately myself, and I'm bedding with a bar of soap tonight! WooHoo!

Thanks!

Re: Bar of soap in bed for leg cramps?
The best and scientific natural cure for leg cramps is a 20 minute hot soak in Epsom Salts. It is cheap and a real scientific cure allowing magnesium to soak into the muscles from the largest organ in the human body, the skin. Magnesium deficiencies need correcting in order to maintain potassium serum levels and is essential for enzyme reactions that essentially feed the muscle cells.

Even the day prior to a strenous day you will notice the benefit and the lighter feel in your steps if you prefeed your muscles with this incredible natural resource.

For centuries the wealthy of Europe travelled to Epsom England to enjoy the relief by the natural occuring hot baths of salts. Today we can buy it for pennies at our local pharmacy and get the same relief that they once could only have once in a great while at huge expense.

I am a huge fan.

It has to be the right type of soap. A bar of Ivory won't do it, but Goats Milk Soap will help.

All expensive, scientific, blind drug studies include a group of individuals that are given placebos/sugar pills. A larger proportion of placebo participants are CURED, yet, no anaysis of HOW/WHY is done? Because THE CURE IS FREE, AND OUR MINDS ARE AS EFFECTIVE AS THEIR POISONS!redface

You know where you can put your flag....

Yes... magnesium oil works for me. A charlie horse in the middle of the night is gruesome! I put magnesium oil on my legs and or feet before bed. No worries!

Magnesium relaxes the muscles while calcium contracts them.

Re: Bar of soap in bed for leg cramps?
OP never heard of soap, but maybe check out foods you are eating that may make your body to acidic. Maybe you need to be more alkaline? (Think Braggs brand organic apple cider vinear - use as salad dressing daily, or a tbspn in glass of water in the morning daily, etc.) Bananas are good for potassium, but too many of them are 'nuked' (aka radiated) so maybe a good mineral/vitamin supplement would work better for you. Just my 2 cents worth - hope all is well.

BTW, I take a product called "Vein Ease". Helps my lower leg issues as I am pre-diabetic. Working on losing weight to et rid of teh 'pre-diabetic' diagnosis. Product does work as an fyi. And a baby aspirin a day works good too.
