Good. Long over-due. Here's the few quick things you need to know about Ehud Barak.

1) The guy may appear likr dorky beurocrat, but he's actually a very decorated General. In his younger days, he was a Commander of an elite commando unit, participating in a lot of dangerous missions to eliminate Islamic terrorists. In fact, one of the commandos he commanded was none other than the current Israeli Primi Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. In other words, he wasn't a mere community organizer like Obama.

2) As a politician, howeve, Ehud Barak was surprisingly LEFT-Wing. After Rabin's assassination, Barak was the leader of Labor Party. Which made him enemies in the Right-wing camp. Barak was the one who not only supported the controversial Oslo Accords, but who at Bill Clinton's insistence in 2000 basically gave Palestinian Yassir Arafat everything Arafat was asking for in a Palestinian state. Instead of accepting the generous offer, Arafat pulled out and elected to start a HORRIFIC 2nd Intifada (suicide bombings and drive-by shootings targetting Israeli buses, restaurants, schools, synagogues, nursing homes).

3) After Labor Party politics of concessions & cowardice, were rejected by Israeli people, Barak basically painted himself into a corner when he split from Labor Party and founded a smaller party called Ha'atzmaut (Independence) 2 years ago. Now, that small party was NOT expected the clear the Knesset thresh-hold in the upcoming Elections. Knowing that, Barak tried to join the ruling Likud party, but a lot of people in Likud rememebered Barak's Left-wing shenanigans & general penchant for trickery -- and refused to allow a "Leftie Trojan-Horse" into their party.

By that time, he was just as despised & distrusted by Right-wingers who never accepted him as his own... and by his former cronies in Left-wing who consider him to be a traitor. So Barak had little choice but to annunce his retirement. Plus, with a looming war with Iran, I bet he figured, let someone else deal with the big head-ache of being Defense Minister in Israel. At almost 70 years old, I can see how the job can be exhausing.

4) Now it's not all bad news. Ehud Barak is still quite popular in the Western ruling circles --- because he was always "cooperative" with the wishes of the elites in Washington DC, Brussels, London, Paris and Berlin. His English is pretty good, but more importantly, he's always known how to speak the "Corrupt-Beurocratese" fluently, which endeared him to Bill Clinton and Co.

It also has made him an effective representative for Israeli MILITARY industries ---- Barak helped Israel sign many lucrative contracts (as opposed to perhaps someone more "honest" like Avigdor Lieberman who would have rubbed the Western politicos the wrong way and otherwise would have seen as "not one of our own" by foreign elites). So Barak has had some value for Netanyahu's government.

Israel's current President Shimon Peres is almost 90 years old and he's more popular as President than he was ever as PM. I think Ehud Barak, too,would make a good President once Peres retires -- the job is mostly ceremonial, but involves lots of rubbing elbows with elites & leading business delegations.

Now if the entire Israeli establishment would just leave we'd live in a much safer world.

Interestingly enough, Barak was the one who wouldn't authorize some of the settlements that Israel wanted to build on occupied land. Maybe Netanyahu wants him out of there so more settlements can be built? It's a theory.

There is NOTHING legally or morally prohibiting Jews from building anywhere. Nobody has canceled the relevant League of Nations provisions enshrined into the founding Charter of its successor, the United Nations --- guaranteeing Israel a FAR bigger land than it currently has, by the way.

Likewise, even the UNSC Resolution 242 doesn't prohit Jews from building over the green line --- until the final-status of territories is mutually-agreed upon by the 2 parties.

Neither does the more recent Oslo Accords (which Palestinians violate every possible way with thier unilateral UN shenanigans). 'Area C' is where most of the building takes place.

If anything, the pace of "settlements" has slowed DRAMATICALLY in the last 10 years. Even a Right-winger like Netanyahu not only agreed to a 10-month building freeze as a good-will gesture to bring Abbas to the negotiation table back in 2010, but as you mention more Left-Wing Ehud Barak has imposed an **unofficial** building freeze since then ----> and Palestinians made more excuses why they don't want to negotiate.

So now Israel is 70,000 apartment units short of what is needed for its population -- and for what? For more Palestinian terror as "thanks"? So Netanyahu took much criticism from his own party --- and Abbas failed to deliver his end of the bargain yet again, just as Arafat didn't before him.

Moreover, Arabs certainly build a SHIT-LOAD of illegal, unapproved, unsafe "structures" all over Israel -- while Barak, world media and bloggers look the other way les they be called "racisss". LOL, who are you kidding here?

So now we know why Hillary-The-Bitch went to Israel!

If Ehud Barak is ever on trial for War-Crimes, that means that Putin, Erdogan, Bush, Obama, Assad, pretty much all Ayatollahs in Iran, NATO commanders and PA Chairman Mahmous Abbas have long been languishing in Hague jails, by that point.

Because compared to how other militaries in the world have operated through-out history, IDF is practically the Mother-Theresa of (urban) warfare.
