Typhoon Bopha hits the Philippines, 52 dead as mudslide kills 44

Typhoon Bopha, the strongest storm to hit the country this year, killed at least 52 people in total after making landfall on the east coast of Mindanao island at dawn, packing winds of 210 kilometres an hour.

A mudslide in a mountainous area near an army patrol base in New Bataan town killed 43 civilians and a soldier, and injured more than two dozen others, local military spokesman Lyndon Paniza told reporters by telephone.

An ABS-CBN television reporter said she counted the bodies laid out in a government building that was converted into a temporary mortuary.

The typhoon brought driving rain and strong winds to Mindanao, toppling trees and power lines, causing localised flooding and forcing more than 56,000 to seek refuge in emergency shelters ..

MANILA, Philippines (AP) -- At least 43 villagers and soldiers drowned in a southern Philippine town Tuesday when torrents of water dumped by a powerful typhoon cascaded down a mountain, engulfing emergency shelters and an army truck, officials said.

The deaths raised the toll from one of the strongest storms to hit the country this year to at least 74.

Gov. Arturo Uy said rain from Typhoon Bopha accumulated atop a mountain and then burst down on Andap village in New Bataan town in hard-hit Compostela Valley province. The victims included villagers who had fled from their homes to a school and village hall, which were then swamped by the flash flood. An army truck carrying soldiers and villagers was washed away, according to Uy and army officials.

"They thought that they were already secure in a safe area, but they didn't know the torrents of water would go their way," Uy told DZBB radio

Two entire provinces lost power and more than 100 domestic flights were canceled. About 60,000 people fled to emergency shelters.

Officials feared many more bodies could be found as rescuers reach hard-hit areas that had been isolated by landslides, floods and downed communications.

A national disaster official, Benito Ramos, said at a news conference on Wednesday afternoon that 274 people had died, 339 were injured and 279 were missing. Those figures were likely to rise, he suggested, since rescue workers had not yet reached several villages in the hardest-hit areas and the casualties there were not known.

Most of the dead appeared to have drowned or been hit by falling trees or flying debris, officials said.

“There is debris in the road, so our soldiers are moving by foot,” Colonel Paniza said. “They are crossing rivers and landslides. I don’t want to speculate, but we don’t know what they will find when they reach those cut off areas.”

Killer typhoon Bopha turns back towards Philippines

The agency urged people on Saturday to prepare for fierce winds of up to 160 kilometres (about 100 miles) an hour and heavy rains when the storm slams into the northern tip of the main island of Luzon.

The surprise development piles more pressure on a country that has called for international aid for the south, where floods and landslides sparked by Bopha have flattened whole villages and left tens of thousands of people homeless.

A United Nations aid assessment team flew to the southern island of Mindanao, which bore the brunt of the destruction, on Saturday and was met with “100 percent destruction", said Imogen Wall, spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

“This is a very poor area where everyone is dependent on agriculture. If people can’t earn money from crops they won’t be able to put food on the table for their families,” she told AFP by telephone.

“They’ll need a lot of help in the coming months. This is going to take a long time.”

Bopha smashed into Mindanao from the Pacific Ocean with gusts of up to 210 kilometres an hour on Tuesday. At least 548 people have been killed and about 500 others missing.

Some 212,000 other people have also been left homeless, according to the civil defence office.

THE UN is to launch a global appeal for millions of typhoon victims in The Philippines as the death toll surged past 600, with 900 people still missing.

"Five million people were affected and they need express assistance," Ms Wall, the spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs said.

Nearly 400,000 people, mostly from Compostela Valley and nearby Davao Oriental province, have lost their homes and are crowded inside evacuation centres or staying with relatives.

Just the name they picked is strange, first let me say it saddens me to here of such disasters and my heart goes out to all afflicted.

That said Bopha or , ph is an eff sound. Is there economic doom being foretold in this typhoon?? Didn't this storm hit them then turn back and hit them again?? Damn weather manipulating evil scumbags.

PHILIPPINES: Still struggling to reach Typhoon Bopha survivors

NEW BATAAN, 10 December 2012 (IRIN) - Search teams in the southern Philippines continue to retrieve decaying bodies days after Typhoon Bopha tore through Mindanao's agricultural areas. Hundreds of thousands “desperately” need aid in the storm’s aftermath, according to relief workers on the ground.

In the hardest hit area of New Bataan Township, in Compostela Valley, entire villages were wiped out by a deadly slurry of mud, rocks and timber that cascaded down the slopes minutes after Bopha made landfall on 4 December.

National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council chief Benito Ramos said on 10 December at least 647 people were killed. Another 780 remained missing.

Of the dead, more than 200 were unclaimed, perhaps because they were beyond recognition or because their relatives were among the dead as well, Ramos said.

To begin with winds up to 250 kilometres per hour. Death toll now past 900 with over 600 people still unaccounted for. Aid agencies report that over 5 million people have been affected and are in need of help. Hundreds of thousands of homes destroyed with hundreds of millions of dollars in damages.
