BRKG: Egypt Votes To Make Sharia Law Main Source Of Egypt’s Constitution

The rushed vote was unexpected, coming just a week after Morsi extended the deadline for drafting the national charter by two months. The constitution was previously scheduled to be completed by December 5.

The Islamist-dominated assembly writing a new Egyptian constitution has convened to vote on the final draft.

In one of its first steps, the constituent assembly voted to keep sharia, or Islamic law, as the main source of legislation.

It comes as the constitutional court indicated that it would rule on Sunday whether to dissolve the assembly.

Egypt's judiciary is in a stand-off with President Mohammed Morsi after he granted himself sweeping new powers.

Mr Morsi's decree last week has sparked huge protests across the country.

Non-Islamists are boycotting the constituent assembly.

Officials at the assembly said on Wednesday they were finishing the draft constitution, even though Mr Morsi recently extended its deadline until February.

"May God bless us on this day," assembly speaker Hossam el-Gheriyani said at the start of Thursday's session.

Egypt's state-run news agency Mena said on Thursday it had obtained details of the draft constitution.

Mena said it includes a clause on press freedom and says that only courts can suspend or close newspapers.

The White House insists Islamists really like America and Obama, that it "takes time to build a democracy" and that embassy marauders and murderers are just peeved over a cheesy Internet movie trailer.

In a February 2011 editorial, "What Egyptians Really Want," we were the first newspaper to puncture the "Arab Spring" myth with hard data from a Pew Research Center poll taken in 2010 showing the vast majority of Egyptians hate America and shun our values.

They never wanted Western-style democracy or protection of human rights. They wanted a theocracy based on barbaric Shariah law. Over 80% want to stone to death Muslims who leave Islam and also stone women accused of adultery. Other highlights:
• 82% of Egyptians dislike the U.S. — the highest unfavorable rating of the 19 Muslim nations surveyed.
• 49% of Egyptians said Islam had played only a "small role" in public affairs under President Hosni Mubarak, while 95% preferred the religion play a "large role in politics."
• 77% think thieves should have their hands cut off.
• 54% support a law segregating women from men in the workplace.
-54% believe suicide bombings that kill civilians can be justified.
• Nearly half support the terrorists Hamas, 30% have a favorable opinion of Hezbollah and one in five have positive views of al-Qaida and Osama bin Laden.

If you did, you'd know in principal nothing changed, that article was put out for Referendum last year already. Christians and Jews fall under their own laws.
We're still going to vote on it too, the people btw...just cuz THEY passed it, doesn't mean its a done deal. Either way, it's all the same what you guys are freaking out over is ridiculous.

Secular versus Islamic

The tradition of Egyptian constitutions has been secular in nature since the first modern constitution was founded in 1923. However, an amendment that differs from this tradition was passed in 1980.

According to the 1980 amendment of the Constitution, Islamic law (Sharia) became the principal source of legislative rules. Such wording simply implies that any new law that is being enacted or considered for enactment should not be in contravention of any prevailing principles of Islamic law (Sharia). It is worth noting that laws regulating personal status issues (marriage, divorce, inheritance, etc.) are derived from Islamic norms, but penal law rules as codified in the Penal Code are entirely non-religious rules, whether they were ratified before or after the 1980 amendment. Egypt has also enacted a number of new laws to respond to contemporary standards of global economic and business reform including laws on investment, anti-money laundering, intellectual property rights, competition, consumer Protection, electronic signatures, banking, and taxation law.[1]

I don't think our leaders and State Department know much about radical islam and sharia laws. Even John Mcain was all for the arab spring.
