2012 Mayan Apocalypse Rumors Have Dark Side, NASA Warns
NASA scientists took time on Wednesday (Nov. 28) to soothe 2012 doomsday fears, warning against the dark side of Mayan apocalypse rumors — frightened children and suicidal teens who truly fear the world may come to an end Dec. 21.

These fears are based on misinterpretations of the Mayan calendar. On the 21st, the date of the winter solstice, a calendar cycle called the 13th b'ak'tun comes to an end. Although Maya scholars agree that the ancient Maya would not have seen this day as apocalyptic, rumors have spread that a cosmic event may end life on Earth on that day.

Thus NASA's involvement. The space agency maintains a 2012 information page debunking popular Mayan apocalypse rumors, such as the idea that a rogue planet will hit Earth on Dec. 21, killing everyone. (In fact, astronomers are quite good at detecting near-Earth objects, and any wandering planet scheduled to collide with Earth in three weeks would be the brightest object in the sky behind the sun and moon by now.)

I truly hope young children have not been told about this 2012 supposed event by their parents. That would be sickening. If I had a teen I would certainly be having a talk with them. Sad.

Just more end of the world peddling by pseudo-scientists trying to make a buck off gullible people. People claim NASA is covering it up.

Usually conspiracy theorists say, "follow the money." Well what does NASA profit from covering up any of those theories? Nothing.

What do the people who are peddling these insane theories get? Just type 2012 into your netflix search bar. Look up all the books that have been written on this supposed event. It's a huge business, built on fooling people through pseudo-scientific claims and claiming any evidence to the contrary is a cover up, while they have no evidence of their own.

Normally, I have no reason to agree with killuminati but in this case, Urban...you're not paying attention....The title perectly describes the article. The "dark side" of these doomsday theories is that dumb, impressionalbe people might believe them and commit suicide out of fear of the end of the world. Young kids and teenagers are particularly at risk.

There is also the risk of groups of people over-reacting and "jumping the gun" and going live with their doomsday plans when there is no doomsday.

When it is not the apocalypse it is called either grand theft or looting.

Look guys it takes TIME for the god of war and destruction to do his work. he won't finish his job in just ONE day. Maybe it'll take him a decade to wipe out the earth population via different means, such as war, earthquakes, nuclear contamination, famine, virus. so both Mayans and NASA are correct.

We don't know how he worked and how long it took him to wipe out the majority of last civilization, few lived to tell. But most likely it wasn't like a one-day deal

Their are a few out there that have had dreams of such events. Those kids do not seem to fear it.
In my opinion most little kids would have nightmare and should not be told. Let them live their lives in peace. Would seem cruel and pointless. As I am sure nothing will happen.
