The people who monitor driving behavior are reporting a massive trend. Its called "gappers" or "gapping" Basically people can be moving at a normal rate in traffic, but as in your situation, people will actively close a safe gap if they see person trying to merge into their lane.

They don't know if it is voluntary or involuntary behavior. They don't know if it makes any difference if you check for the gap and then signal, or signal and check for the gap.

Don't sweat it OP. Say you are sorry, even if you have nothing to be sorry about.

I was in a hurry finishing up errands today. I realized, on my last errand that I was in the wrong lane, so I signaled to turn into the appropriate lane. It was clear. I turned into the drugstore and parked. Next thing I know, this old man was staring at me. I got out of the car. He stood there and said simply......"you cut me off". I apologized and went into the drugstore. I turned around and he was standing there. A few minutes later, he was still standing there and apparently using a cell phone. I was so rattled that I only made half of my intended purchases. No car damage, but I'm still very afraid. I know how silly this sounds so sarcastic answers are not appreciated.

it was a two lane exit, but I could see parked cars in my lane about 150 yards ahead, so i thought, 'old geezer, no probs'

revved it right up, and hit the accelerator right on amber, but he did too, the twat, and he fucking floored it too

i managed to get in front of him just before the parked cars tho, much to his annoyance/beeping flashing of lights, etc,, and I gave him the , just for good measure.
