Unfortunately. It looks like the Sun's poles have indeed reversed. which indicates an end to this Solar Max. There is talk of a mini ice age coming in the near future. Only time will tell.

Wait.... what? When did we have the max? Next year is solar max.

Wouldn't be 'positive about the first, but the minimum will come, sooner or later..... So 50% right at least.

REAL question IS .... WHAT comes in between ? WHAT will happen when we reach MAXIMUM density with the plasma cloud we have entered ?

AND, finally, will we be hit by a galactic wave ( Or 2,3, ? ) as we pass the plane VERY SOON ?

If your looking for simple answers to these complex issues, you can quickly find that when you use google, or weki-weki doesn't help, LOL !

One question : Have you made ANY preparations like food storage, seeds, water, etc. GRASSHOPPER ?

interesting find

the Sun really has been more quiet the last weeks, no major sunspots/eruptions lately.
I check [link to www.solarham.net] almost every day, trying to keep track of what's happening up there, and also, I remember that during spring for example, there were significantly more sun-doom threads here on GLP as well

can someone revisit the info about the suns' poles shifting to positive positive, i thought it was this spring time-ish but may have been 2011?

how long did it stay positive positive and how does that effect this shift?

or was that all bullshit?

NASA - Hinode and SOHO Paint An Asymmetrical Picture Of the Sun
www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/hinode/news/pole-asymmetry.html
Apr 20, 2012 – "The north is already in transition, well ahead of the south pole, and we don't ... relies on Hinode data that shows direct observations of this polar switch. ... The large blue patches show regions of positive polarity, which remain ...

While the cycle unfolds with seeming regularity every 11 years, in two upcoming papers scientists highlight just how asymmetrical this process actually is. Currently the polarity at the north of the sun appears to have decreased close to zero – that is, it seems to be well into its polar flip from magnetic north to south -- but the polarity at the south is only just beginning to decrease.

"Right now, there's an imbalance between the north and the south poles," says Jonathan Cirtain, a space scientist at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., who is also NASA's project scientist for a Japanese solar mission called Hinode. "The north is already in transition, well ahead of the south pole, and we don't understand why."

One of the two papers relies on Hinode data that shows direct observations of this polar switch. The other paper makes use of a new technique observing microwave radiation from the sun's polar atmosphere to infer the magnetic activity on the surface. The asymmetry described in the papers belies models of the sun that assume that the sun's north and south polarities switch at the same time. In addition, both papers agree that the switch is imminent at the north pole, well in advance of general predictions that solar maximum for this cycle will occur in 2013. Lastly, the direct Hinode results also suggest a need to re-examine certain other solar models as well.

Thread: Solar maximum = Maunder Minimum

When they overly doomify to the max then, to me, it's a distraction. When everybody goes west guess which direction i'm going. It starts with a W. The solar maximum may not be the bringer of doom. Way too much overdramatic postering. It's probably the solar miniumum where the real doom lurks. Cycle 24 solar max is going to be big so expect the next solar min to be big as well. Just like a real cold winter precedes a real hot summer. An ice age will precede cycle 24 solar max.
Thus the Maunder Minimum

Maunder Minimum

5. Is Global Warming Solar or Man-made?

The vested interests on both sides of the argument between the ``greenhouse'' party and the ``solar warming'' party are obvious. Scientifically, the meteorologists, climatologists, and atmospheric physicists, who were responsible for ``discovering'' the human contribution to the terrestrial greenhouse effect, have been the most consistent champions of its importance, while the solar physics community, and especially those interested in solar-terrestrial relations, have increasingly stressed the possible importance of the long-term variations of the solar constant as the chief cause of climate change. Both communities tend to take the change for granted, and to neglect any purely statistical or chaotic effects which could lead to excursions of the Earth's surface temperature during periods of a couple of decades, without requiring a secular change either in the solar constant or in atmospheric transparency. In addition, the debate is conditioned by more powerful vested-interest groups. The oil industry in all its guises would obviously like to believe, and would like the public to believe, that greenhouse warming has been greatly exaggerated, and exploits any genuine scientific differences to undermine the credibility of the climatologists. Solar physics has been losing ground steadily compared with other branches of astrophysics during the past few decades, and many of its practicioners have seen solar climate change as a chance to move into an area where funding may be more assured. These aspirations are of course legitimate, and there is indeed much work to be done in the field, but one should be aware of the political background to this delicate issue, and not fall into the trap of using possible solar warming as an excuse for delay in reducing man-made emissions of greenhouse gases. Whatever the magnitude of the effects of these in the long term, there is no doubt that their concentration has increased dramatically in the past 30 years, and that for many reasons this is not a desirable path to follow.

Re: Looks Like We Have Officially Reached Solar Maximum. Next Stop...Solar Minimum
There is also historical evidence that long-term periods of global cold, rainfall, drought, and other weather shifts relate to solar cycle activity:

Times of depressed solar activity seem to correspond with times of global cold. For example, during the 70-year period from 1645 to 1715, few, if any, sunspots were seen, even during expected sunspot maximums. Western Europe entered a climate period known as the "Maunder Minimum" or "Little Ice Age." Temperatures dropped by 1.8 to 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit.
[link to www.almanac.com]

Predictions for Solar Cycle 24

Most solar science experts believe that both Cycle 24 and the following cycle (25) may be relatively quiet ones, leading to a cooling pattern over the next few decades. If this cooling phase on Earth is offset by any warming caused by increasing greenhouse gases, they also raise the question of whether an eventual warming cycle could lead to more rapid warming on Earth than expected.

To quote Bob Berman, astronomer for The Old Farmer's Almanac, "If the upcoming solar max of Cycle 24 is normal or robust, and especially if an El Niño follows it 2 years later (as often happens), then the middle of this decade will be the hottest period since humans arrived on Earth. However, if the upcoming maximum is wimpy, as most solar researchers expect, or if the Sun is now entering an extended period of low activity, that is the best thing it could possibly do for us. Such a scenario would mitigate climate change. Essentially, the Sun has been buying us time."

Stay tuned. We'll continue to update this sunspot page regularly to keep you informed.
