Do I have to participate in this survey?

Why are businesses required by law to respond?

Business surveys provide important economic information. It is used by businesses, unions, non-profit organizations and all levels of government to make informed decisions in many areas.

Because most business surveys feed directly or indirectly into legally mandated programs, mandatory response is required to ensure an adequate response rate and, therefore, reliable results.

What did she want to survey you on? Labor, business or Agriculture? Did she show you ID? I would have said send me a letter to arrange for an appointment, I would refuse to give personal info to someone who shows up at my door.

Yes, next time have camera ready and ask for a copy of said legislation/law where we are bound to take a survey for statistics Canada. Now, it may exist (I don't know), but you have a right to know your rights...and you want it in writing!

I received a census work book in the USA a few years ago. About 10 pages of questions. I tossed it in the trash. I got a second one about a month later. I sent it back, it was postage paid, with a not written over the front in magic marker. I said that every time I deal with the government it cost me money. I suggested they attach a check for $100 and then I will consider spending the time to fill out their work book. Never received an answer.

Just have fun with it. Tell them you are a compulsive liar. I love it when the Jehovah's witnesses come around...

The u.s. census 2010 was as heavyhanded as you're experiencing, and they did come back to haunt a lot of people with questions far beyond (26 or more) what the Census was designed to do, tell how many people live in your household.
If you didn't fill it out the form says you will be fined $5,000 plus some other punishment and that you are required by law to supply this info to the gov't and you could trust they would respect your info as CONFIDENTIAL sure, right.
Don't give them your phone # even if you expect them to find it.

What I did on my Census form (colorado) was to cite the 4th and 5th amendment on each and every question beyond how many lived in our household.
There was a second part for one more member of your household but didn't bother to fill it out with reference to the first part being germaine to the second.

They never bothered me after I mailed it back.

Find out what you can cite and don't give them anything they claim to have a right to so better you give them a big fat no without agonizing over particulars. In fact they should have informed you of your rights and didn't.

With the exception of the short-form Census, individuals are not required by law to participate in any Statistics Canada survey.

Businesses, on the other hand, ARE required to answer certain surveys. If the person who came to OP's door said otherwise then she is a damned liar.

Christ, I'd better not get a long form....though, I did work for Stats Can one year after highschool, and all the short and long forms were delivered in the Summertime - I don't recall any from the summer we just passed, so how long has OP been holding-out on filling out the damn forms?

The census came to my door four times and I received several phone calls asking for a survey. I simply hung up the phone on the surveys. After the first visit by the census taken, I refused to answer any more questions. The last person who came, just came to confirm that I refused to answer any more questions. No doubt, we're probably on some list of "subversives". The second woman (the first was also a woman), got pretty testy about it and I just shut the door in her face. The third tried being nice. The man who came on the fourth trip was dripping with nice, but I made it abundantly clear--no more info on ANYTHING period. He assured me there would be no more visits. I assured him that he was absolutely correct.

I have a friend who answered the door naked on some Jehovah's Witnesses.It worked like a charm and they never returned.
