I know Op was being sarcastic but college isn't stupid in the sense that it's an education that brings along nice benefits in life, but the way the system is set up in America to receive an education is kind of stupid. Another stupid point about college is that it really doesn't take a lot of knowledge or intellect or ability to get a degree. What's the rule, people? 90% of life is just showing up. College is mostly just about showing up and making at least a weak attempt at the work, lol. But obviously, learning is never stupid, that would be impossible. Anyway, I do find it really interesting that on this website people are so belligerent and angry towards someone for being prosperous, successful, educated and encouraging others to get an education. I wouldn't know where to expect that kind of shade, but it definitely wasn't here, I was really surprised to read the comments. I might have had the wrong idea about this place! Me personally, I have a 2-year degree that's quite useless to me and I'm back in college again now, although I'm struggling in school a lot more this time than last time! Eek. |

There are huge numbers of successful entrepreneurs who never graduated from a college. Like any institution in our society, higher education has it's advantages and drawbacks. Frankly, it is way overpriced and guaranteed Gov't grants and loans are directly responsible for the outrageous pricing as well as the growth of 'for-profit' colleges. I have taught a public university, a public technical college, and 2 different for-profit technical colleges. In 2007 I resigned from one of the for-profit tech schools primarily because I was tired of making 60K a year when my graduating (top) students were starting at 75K. So, clearly school works far better for some than others. I'd like to know what he manufactures before I judge anything...a lot of manufacturing is crap we don't need anyway... ...there is waste in gov't and private business...everywhere. Of course, it depends on what you value. If you value material junk over education than working for the conservative manufacturer that employs 2-year degree, technical school-only idiots will work best for you. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 7570540 United States 12/13/2012 06:12 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | you have a masters and only make 62k a year? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29710683 you suck at life. I know early twenty year olds making much more..and they never went to college Selling drugs doesn't count. One would assume you are young and very ignorant. $62K is a pretty good salary in this day and age. I know a lot of people with masters who do not make $50K and they've been working for years. It all depends on which field you pursue - obviously, some are better paying than others. If you choose a lower paying field such as the ministry, education, or social work, it hardly means you suck. If you choose a higher paying field such as engineering or some of the medical fields it hardly means you are somehow better because you make more money. By your reasoning, the more money a person makes the better a person he is. So Hollywood skanks and professional steroid-infused athletes are better people than the rest of us? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 27794775 United States 12/13/2012 06:20 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You know, there really is something to be said for the OP's post: education is good. Granted, some people can go to school and get those certifications with out getting a real one, but in the end education is good. I seek it out, all the time on my own. I'm not rich, but at least I can do the math and see who's screwing me. Turns out its not the government. The "average" US worker makes $51,000. However this average is skewed by the top 1%, who make $717,000 (each monthly paycheck has $50,000 printed on it) The median income (if you line people in US from poorest to richest) is $32,000, which is a far more accurate picture of what the normal person makes. (monthly paycheck is around $2200) Now, over the past decades, Americans have been producing more and more, working harder and harder, but getting poorer and poorer while those at those top income levels get richer and richer: [link to www.csmonitor.com] Now who are those parasites, those welfare queens? Well, turns out Walmart workers for one. They get paid so little, they require welfare assistance to survive. [link to www.addictinginfo.org] Walmart’s intentionally low wages force employees to need approximately $420,000 per year, per store, totalling $2.66 BILLION annually in food stamps and other taxpayer assistance…to survive. While the owners of Walmart? Well, they are so rich, their combined worth is the same as the bottom 40% of Americans. The CEOs make several hundreds of times more than their employees, forcing them on to welfare. But they are winners, aren't they? And who else are the "parasites"? Senior citizens. Disabled people. Children. But those who engineered a situation where Americans get less and less to do more and more? The richest Americans? I don't hear you criticizing them. They are the heroes, forcing people to work for them for minimum wage. Right. I don't have what the OP has, but the fact is his life is a lot closer to what we all could be living, while the $717,000 life is simply not possible for everybody to live, and requires incredible sacrifices from everybody else, like the hard working walmart employees who live on welfare, to enable. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1516308 Netherlands 12/13/2012 06:37 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Last year of college now but it doesn't feel right. I feel like it is holding me back. I have learned everything I wanted to learn in the first 3 years, I got my skill set, I have seen the things I wanted to see and this last year there is nothing left to learn, its only writing papers and doing research. It sucks cause I know what I want but I can't do it cause I have to finish my degree. And the assesments we get this year have nothing to do with my field of interest. I can't quit now, I'll be left with a pretty big debt and no degree but I feel like I am wasting my time doing stuff I don't like while I could be doing the stuff I want and build on a career. It doesn't help that college is constantly pushing me to build up something for after college but at the same time I have to do all this shit that has nothing to do with my field of interest. |

Thoughts like "ill never be able to make more because i don't have a degree" are not true. I dropped out of college because I couldnt focus, and hated it so bad i could barely make it to class. My company will do 10 million this year so I'm one that truly believes you can do whatever you set your mind to. |

I was worried about a job so I went ahead and stayed in school and got a masters in anthropology and art history. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29737291 I graduated last Spring. Now I run a military historical museum for the federal government. I do didly squat besides make a few presentations and sign some paper work. I earn $62k a year with federal benefits. My loans are no problem, just a little pocket change covers them. It helps that my wife makes $70k for the state of Virginia as an agency director. She went to college on loans and grants just like I did. I drive a new SUV. My wife has a mercedes. We just bought a four bedroom victorian era home. College is stupid though, isn't it. sweet, cool story, but were all about to die, so go fuck urself, noone cares |
