According to various mainstream and citizen media reports, the situation was critical, as many of those stuck inside their cars were running out of food, water and gasoline, while the weather was not getting better. Boris Pelekh, whose relatives spent hours freezing inside a bus not far from Lviv, has been posting short dispatches on the situation on Facebook. In his first and second updates, posted in the morning of Sunday, he was urging his readers to share information about the emergency - and more than 3,000 Facebook users did. Some ten hours after the first updates, Pelekh wrote that the bus and other cars nearby were finally dug out of the snow, and his relatives were on the way to the nearest town. Pelekh's mother told him that the villagers had taken in the children from the cars, to warm them up, while their parents had stayed behind; some ended up suffering frostbite and were eventually taken to a hospital. Facebook event thread, which was set up by the “Common Cause” Civic Movement, the situation on certain segments of the blocked routes appears to be under control and people seem to have been evacuated from their trapped vehicles. Facebook user Oleg Prots, who knows one of the volunteer rescuers currently at work in an affected area, is asking netizens not to spread panic. [link to hisz.rsoe.hu] |

Description Heavy snow stranded drivers for hours in icy winds on the night from Wednesday (December 12) to Thursday (December 13) with the army trying to get people to safety. Hundreds of people remained stuck on roads in the north-east of the country with 7 counties badly affected by the storm. "We were stuck until the army came," said one passenger. "I suffered hypothermic shock. We stayed in the car, after that we tried to walk, but I felt very bad," the woman added. "We couldn't pass, so we tried this way to get towards Roman (a town in north-east part of Romania), but it's not possible," another passenger said who had been stuck in the snow for hours. Fifty villages remained isolated in Dolj county and 40 schools were still closed on Thursday. "He (girls father) is still isolated. His mobile phone battery is dead. He has been isolated since Sunday. It's not possible to reach him, the snow is too deep. There are also three more people who couldn't come down to the village," said one woman about her father. Dozens of villages also remained isolated also in Iasi county. Extremely low temperatures are expected in the coming days, up to minus 14 F in parts of the country and minus 7 F in Bucharest. Back Updated: Sunday, 16 December, 2012 at 18:21 UTC Description Icy streets and sidewalks in a number of Bulgarian cities and towns have sent Sunday hundreds of people to hospitals. 90 people have been examined over the course of the day in the Emergency "Pirogov" Hospital in the capital Sofia. 22 of them have been admitted for emergency surgeries on broken arms, ankles and shoulder blades. Over 100 people have been examined in the ER in the Danube city of Vidin, 56 in the northern city of Pleven, and 13 people with broken arms and legs were admitted in the hospital of the Danube city of Ruse. The warmer temperatures in the aftermath of the polar cold during the past week and the overnight rain, mixed with ice and sleet, have caused treacherous conditions on many roads and are impeding traffic and even public transportation, particularly in the regions of Veliko Tarnovo, Pleven, Blagoevgrad, Lovech and Vratsa. In the capital Sofia, the streets and boulevards used by public transportation and its stops have been treated since Saturday night with 80 special machines. Steep roads remain problematic, particularly in the Vitosha and Lyulin districts as well as neighborhood streets, which remain untreated for the time being. The icy conditions will continue Monday, the national weather service warns. [link to hisz.rsoe.hu] |

Snow up to 10 feet deep (3 meters) blocks Ukrainian highway. Witnesses told Xinhua that they saw hundreds of trapped cars with snow piled up to the car roofs. The trapped were seeking help from nearby villages for food and heating. The snow caused a traffic jam that extended to about 14 miles (20 km) on a highway linking the Ukrainian capital and the Hungarian border as of late Sunday, authorities said. The section of highway involved – between Buh and Brody districts – was blanketed by snow as deep as three meters, said the Emergencies Ministry. A woman stuck in the traffic jam gave birth in her car before emergency crews arrived. She and her baby were later sent to a local hospital. “Heavy snow causes 20-km-long traffic jam in Ukraine,” said the headline on Xinhua. I think that headline far understated the situation. [link to news.xinhuanet.com] Argiris Diamantis. “A traffic jam of 20 km may not seem spectacular, but 3 meters of snowfall sure is,” says Argiris. I’ll be watching the Dutch television tonight to see if they have this item.” [link to iceagenow.info] |

Quoting: Luisport Description Heavy snowfall and strong wind blocked roads across northern Ukraine and left hundreds of villages without electricity, authorities said Tuesday. The Emergencies Ministry said sleet, snow and powerful wind brought down power lines in some 200 villages in northern Ukraine. With snow as thick as 50 cm in some areas, hundreds of cars were blocked on the snow-covered highways in the northern Kiev and Chernigov regions. The snowy weather has caused traffic chaos in the capital, where some 10,000 of cars have been stranded on major transport interchanges and bridges. More than 30 traffic accidents occurred in Kiev Tuesday morning, according to the authorities. As of midday (1000 GMT), the Boryspil International Airport and Kiev airport still operated normally. Not always necessary, but occasionally the wind will make the roads disappear under snow drifts, and highways are closed if deemed dangerous by the authorities, so it's easy to get stranded away from home, even if your 4WD vehicle could make it through. Last evening, with howling winds and snow being blown all over the place, was amazing to behold, and the winds this morning roared with volume like going out onto the tarmac to get into a plane with engines running. (PNW USA) From the sound of it, with so many stranded in the Ukraine, the wind must have blown power lines over the roads, or caused snow drifts that made the roads impassable. Shame that so many people were caught in it. Was it much stronger than expected? Hope they get home safely. SYNOPSIS and DISCUSSION A large arctic anticyclone resides over Russia, filled with very cold airmass. Most of Europe is covered in modified polar, rather dry and stable airmass. A mid-level ridge will slowly translate from Atlantic towards the continental Europe, singaling WAA / warm front passage over Western Europe. This front is tied to a large, deep cyclone over the Atlantic. Short-wave trough associated with the cyclonic vortex will affect NW Iberia during the late evening / night hours with slight possiblity of electrified DMC thanks to enhanced low-level moisture in the southerly flow. Nevertheless, weak lapse rates will likely preclude any significant instability build-up. More prominent convective activity is forecast over the Eastern Mediterranean region. Very deep cyclonic vortex along with surface cyclogenesis over the Aegean Sea will contribute to the favourable forcing over the region. Surface cyclone will translate towards Southern Turkey during the Wednesday. A belt of enhanced mid-level lapse rates will spread around the vortex, nosing towards the Aegean Sea. This will contribute to at least marginal latent instability release. A severe weather potential will exist over Southern Turkey, but mostly east of our forecast region where stronger southerly flow should be observed. Therefore, we go without a Level 1 atm.
