You should start with the poky little puppy. You'll probably be quite smart after 1 year of reading.

If you can make it one year you will be for the better. We gave up TV over a year and a half ago and it has been absolutely wonderful. However when others ask you about this and that on tv and you're reply is that you don't watch tv they will be flabbergasted and think you are weird. But who cares what others think right;) You are making the right decision though.

Online is cheaper anyway in the long-term, especially with unlimited broadband. Plus you can get the excellent press.tv, al jazeera, and RT streams giving you a different perspective on things other than the westernised right-wing crap.

I did the same thing. I decided to get rid of it for 1 year.

That was 8 years ago. I never got another.

You will soon start to be clearer.

After a while it will just annoy you when you see it.

You will realize just how much of peoples lives are centered around TV. And you will see just how much of peoples conversations are about TV.

Good luck OP.

One of the best things I ever did.

TV is only a invention brought forward to the masses 80 years ago, thousands upon thousands of years before this we used human integrity and imagination to pass the time.

Now it's 'government approved' babysitting which is the norm, I have a feeling 2000 years into the future we'll either all be cabbages or wondering wtf happened.

I love reading. If I can power my Kindle Fire I will be able to read my 1500 books on them and my 300 physical books when the SHTF. I often am reading while hubby watches TV.

We have 1 day a week for no TV where the children and I read, work puzzles or play games. Hubby sleeps in his recliner. lol

Good on you op.

I like historical fiction.

My favorite books so far, ones I have read more than once.

Ben Hur
The Assyrian
The Face of Fear
The French Atlantic Affair
Marco Polo

Re: i've decided to disconnect my TV for one year and read instead.
the local library in our town and the towns around us have been cutting back on the amount of books on their shelves, I know there a library and should have books. but they have all formed a chain and as long as 1 library in the group has the book then the other ones can ditch them. Any how our library has a sale once a month and sells these extra books for .10-.25 each. I would find a library close to you that may be doing the same thing and load up. You could easily get a years worth of books on things that interest you for next to nothing.
Ecclesiastes 1:9-11
What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one can say,“Look! This is something new”? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time. No one remembers the former generations, and even those yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow them.

thanks! that's encouraging. my main reason is to improve my reading comprehension and literacy skills. it's never to late for improvement. i hope to make some improvement.

i googled top 100 books everyone should read. there are a few lists out there, but most of the reading lists recommend the same books. i'll just pick books of that list. most of the books are classics which are good reads.
[link to www.telegraph.co.uk]

hope i'll learn to read faster and absorb more so i can read as many as i can from the list.

Re: i've decided to disconnect my TV for one year and read instead.
I got rid of mine 2 years ago. Best thing I ever did. I have lots of time for other things. It was very liberating. I thought I would read more and though I do read I just found more to do instead. Outside and Gardening took on a whole new meaning.

What made me decide to do it was one night from my barn I watched all the flashing going on thru the window from my TV and decided that there was somthing not right about that. It was like a thunder and lightening storm was going on in my house. It made me sick actually to see it. I walked in the house and turned it off.

I watch and rent the odd movie and thats it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll add them to my list for sure.

When your hubby is watching TV, are you in the same room reading? Just wondering if you can concentrate on what you are reading with the TV in the background or are you in a room alone with no distractions?

i don't read at all, so i can't even think of an area i like. i just read internet stories of MSN and Yahoo.

i just bought my nephew the Hobbit book for Christmas, so I picked up an extra copy for me to read. thought i'd ease into it. and i could chat with my nephew about the book. it's my first book that i'm reading. i can't remember the last time i read a book. i've picked up a few and made it through the first couple chapters only.
