I have used those exact same words/concept for what I call Christ's two commandments. I do the same, if a passage in the bible seems to contradict these commandments then it follows that it must either be mistranslated or I have misunderstood its meaning and purpose. For those statements form the basis for the Law and Prophets (according to Christ himself).

I have argued with other Christians about the concept of hell before. I have always maintained that either we don't understand it or no one is actually going to go.

An eternal hell presents a contradictory problem for other doctrines in the bible. To illustrate lets compose a thought experiment. I am the father of a son, whom I bring up Christian morals. I believe in Jesus Christ I die, I go to heaven. My son falls away, becomes an atheist and denounces the concept of Jesus on his deathbed.

How am I consolable existing in Heaven knowing full well my only son exits in hell. Either heaven is not void of weeping, inconsolable souls longing for their loved ones. Or my son cannot go to hell. The idea of living in paradise is contradictory to idea of living knowing your loved ones are perishing in utter agony in hell. You are left with the following very large issue:

Either Heaven is not Paradise or Hell is not Eternal.

It is simply inconceivable for you to Love your neighbor as yourself and for you to go to a paradise where that same neighbor is perishing in agony.

It is for that reason I have always thought the doctrine of Hell must mistranslated or misunderstood in some way. Or perhaps Heaven is misunderstood and we get to weep for eternity for our loved ones.

People have the choice to sin or not to sin, if they choose their sin and refuse to repent they die in their sin and God's judgment is hell, thus one would be thrown in. God is a holy God and there is no sin in Him, but Jesus Christ took on the sins of the world and paid the price on the cross so that we can be forgiven and free from sin and made spotless so we can obtain heaven.
