Here's the weigh in we did with Charlie Christmas Day, my son went on the scale first, then he picked up Charlie and weighed and we did the math. Had to be there, it was funny!

How do you weigh your dog OP? Like this? LOL

My fucking coyote mix still made me take him out for a walk earlier this week while I was sneezing all over the place and my running nose never stopped running. 30 minutes of walking was all he cared about and he leaves me alone rest of the day.

Very loyal but damn it, I wish he'd just do his business in the backyard for once while I rest.

The gsd I grew up with in the mid 70's was a police reject my dad was given at 2yrs of age and weighed in at 115 pds of solid muscle. Most american gsd's today are pathetic or the owners are afraid to feed them and/or work them because of hip issues; it's sad.

I'm 6'2" and 230. My scale would blow up with me and Reggie on it. He gets check ups every 6 months to check his hips. The vet weighs him.

Thank you. We have him trained so that when we say " watch him" and point at someone or even the tv he will curl his lip and show his teeth and do a deep belly growl. He is awesome.

He loves kids and puppies too.
 Quoting: j994k

You're fortunate to have him and he's fortunate to have you.
They are soooo intelligent. The number of words they can learn is mind boggling. Sometimes you don't even need words. They just "know".

My dog "finds" things. When I tell him to find his ball, he'll bring me one. If it's a green one, I tell him, "not that one, find the blue one", and he gets it. If he drops it in front of me I tell him to put it in my lap, and he does.

Better stop now. It's hard to turn it off when talking about our loving and loved dogs. rockon
 Quoting: Nine's

That is awesome. Reggie's favorite toy is a big red Kong ball. We can hide it anywhere and he will find it within a few minutes. They are so smart.
 Quoting: j994k

GSDs are miraculous!

Nice that you found Kong toys for him; dogs with strong jaws usually cannot shred them and I've never known of any that could tear up the even stronger black Kong toys.

cool
my dog defended me against an assailant on the street today,
I hardly walk around without him anymore.
soon as the idiot touched me the dog went for his leg.
Of course he threatened to kill my dog and then threatened to kill me before running away like a little bitch. I'm sure he would have tried something more if the dog wasn't at my side. Poor pooch might have to take a bullet for me sooner or later, however if thats the case, he will be avenged!

Congrats to you. Jessie James must be a fine animal. Though my opinion of most cops isn't positive, I have friends who are cops. One of them trains PD's trainers all over the country on firearms and some other things. As a result, many cops visit and they work with the dogs. I've been fortunate to have my last dog included when they trained and/or tracked and be able to film them and know them. They are incredible. Here's a video for Jesse James. 8)

If you have a true pure bred German Shepherd, then he is grossly over weight.

Male German Shepherds should not be over 100 pounds.

And, yes, I fully expect a bunch of morons to talk about their 200 pound german shepherds yadda yadda. Save your breathe.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6411376

I have a shepherd, his weight is 120 and he is 14 years old. The larger shepherds are sometimes called "old fashion" shepherds or "large boned" shepherds. They are big dogs, not the smaller police type shepherds. 120 - 130 is not overweight for these types of shepherds

Ideal weight for shepherds vary and not all shepherds are the type you typically see in K-9 units

Males:

Height at the wither: 24 to 26 Inches

Weight: 60-130 pounds

Females:

Height at the wither: 22 to 24 Inches

Weight: 45-110 pounds

Actually you are wrong. You should revisit the German breed standard. The Germans are very specific as to what types of dogs are and are not to be bred. American lines have no real standard or breed regulations for that matter, and tend to be bigger. That being said, dogs that are neutered tend to grow larger than they are genetically predisposed to.

Does Ruca constantly bring you balls wanting you to go play?
Sweet as it is and patient as they are, it can get a little annoying when you're real busy, can't it?

Easily half the time I'm sitting, there's a ball that's been placed in my lap with it's owner staring intently, watching my every move, hoping that the next move will be toward the ball and he'll hear "ok, let's go." LOL.

Re: My 130 pound German Shepard...
I love this thread. It is so heart warming to see individuals who love their animal companions as much as you obviously do, OP.

I have been around working breeds my whole life: GSD's, Kelpies, Border Collies, and Blue Heelers. They are all incredibly intelligent dogs, and utterly beautiful.

Five years ago, my last dog died. Circumstances did not allow for another dog at the time. It was a long five years.

Now, while I am not comfortable sharing my story here, a series of events occurred last year that left me with nothing but the clothes on my back, and what I brought back from the US on the plane in my suitcase after a holiday there. I was given somewhere to stay by a very generous stranger who is now a very good friend.

It has been a difficult year but, six weeks ago, we were given a six week old puppy to foster. She was far too young to be taken from her mother, and was taken to a home with a small child who was allowed to continually pick this puppy up and drop her on her head! (Yes, when she was brought here we had her checked by a vet and no damage appears to have been done; at least physically)

Long story short? My house mate (who gave me the place to stay) saw just how much the puppy and I thrived in each other's company. Her foster home is now her 'forever home' and she is laying at my feet now; both of us freshly washed and only lightly towel dried, as we try to get cool in this awful heat.

Her name is Topaz. She is the child of a pedigree English Mastiff that was somehow allowed to breed with a pedigree Staffordshire Bull Terrier! While she is not as intelligent as the dogs I am used to, she is still smart and has a beautiful temperament. She is now 12 weeks old and has learned 'sit', 'stay', heel', 'sit AND stay', and is about to learn 'drop'. We are healing each other in our own way. She is happiest when she is in my company and I feel content in hers. I just uploaded two photos of her as custom smilies. Topaz Topazagain

Not trying to hijack your thread at all OP. Your Reggie sounds like an incredible dog. These animals can heal hearts and make houses homes. Thank you for sharing a bit about Reggie here.hf

Topaz is beautiful! Just look at those eyes.

I hate hearing about your troubles, and about someone allowing a child to mistreat that poor puppy. That just makes me sick. It's so amazing that even though they may have been mistreated, they don't dwell on it, but focus on being thankful for everything. Topaz must be very thankful.

Thank you for sharing your touching story and your beautiful friend. (talk about hijacking...that's me) LOL.
