Food Prices already up 9% this year!!! In Egypt the food inflation rate hit 19% in early 2011. For President Hosni Mubarak that was game over. The regime was finished. It goes back much further than that, however. Failed harvests in France in 1788 and 1789 meant that the cost of bread soared. From taking 50% of the average working man’s wages it went up to 88%. The result? The French Revolution. The economists Helge Berger and Mark Spoerer have pinned the European revolutions of 1848 on the soaring price of wheat. Likewise, a shortage of food and soaring prices led to strikes in Petrograd in 1917 — and sparked the Russian Revolution. |

Nor can it be disputed that food is rising in price right now. The U.S. is set to have a poor harvest this year because of a widespread drought. So will Russia and the Ukraine, both massive wheat producers. |

That's apter than people realize: the "hungry '40s" were years of bad harvests across Europe. Hungry people are angry people, and angry people bring governments down. Will 2013 bring us social turmoil in Brazil, strikes in China or revolution in Pakistan? The answer can probably be read in the price indexes of the commodities exchanges -- and it is anything but reassuring. [link to www.cnn.com] |

A drought in Russia in 2010 forced suspension of Russian grain exports that year and set in motion the so-called Arab spring. |

Your comment earlier, "guess nobody on glp seems to care about the rise in food prices n what it leads to. new gun laws to take guns away from citizens so when food prices skyrocket the people do not have the tools to fight back," made me think of what people would do to eat. Survival is the strongest instinct we have. We can probably guess what friends, neighbors, and even family would do when they're starving. Some would even turn on loved ones if they weren't starving...which reminded me of a story. Since many here are aliterate, I found a you tube. It's a little off topic, but you did have gun control in the title. LOL. If you don't want it here, let me know and I'll take it off, or you can. |

Food Prices already up 9% this year!!! Yes, I've been monitoring my food costs for the past two years. Either the prices go up, or the package size goes down just a bit, so you won't notice. Except I do! And I've now started following a few foraging websites so that if and when food becomes too difficult/expensive to find at the store, I will have at least something to throw into the pot to make into soup/stirfry. Hungry people get scary, and it doesn't take long at all (what is that remark about only being three missed meals?). When your kids are hungry you'll do anything to make that go away. |

Food Prices already up 9% this year!!! You just have to watch the sale papers and look around at the stores and be thoughtfull about your purchases and stocking up items. Walmart has 29 oz. cans of Libby's 100% pumpkin for $1 each. Regular $2.88. They're clearance items. Exp. date May 2014. We got 7 cans so far. Gonna go back and get a few more. They also had Libby's pumpkin pie mix in the 29 oz. cans foir $1.50. Aldi had bags of baby carrots for $.49 each. 4 bags of those makes 4 pots of stew. Dierberg's had 1/3 lb. beef patties 10 for $10. They often have meat sales where you can gen 9 oz. or bigger round steaks for $5 a piece as well as other cuts of meat and chicken and fish. We buy like $40 at a time when they have those sales. Tombstone pizza's are 3, sometimes 4 for $10. If you use coupons and buy one get one free deals and clearance items you can eat pretty cheap. You just have to buy extra of those each time to hold you over till next time they're on sale. Jack in the box gives you a coupon for 2 free tacos every time you buy 2 tacos or anything else. So you can eat 4 tacos for $1 practically every day if you want. Prices of many things have gone up, but if they sit on the shelf long enough, they have to put them on sale to make room for new stock. Once you get in the habbit of shopping the right way it becomes easy and fun and actually kind of rewarding since you know that you've kinda worked around the system in a small way. Shop smart! Shop S-mart! |
