accomplish new things every day to boost your confidence.
bake some bread, start drawing, go to a movie by yourself. maybe go on a trip alone; test your smarts. challenge yourself. get a job in customer service for a while.

Become a commission salesman.
Where you have to sell to eat.
Has worked for many.

Do a stint as a person to person survey taker.
This will bring you out as your job mandates interaction.

Just tell yourself you are as important and as good as anyone else - because you are! There should be no reason to be intimidated by another human or to worry what they think about you.

Even though you may think others are better than you in some areas there are always things you are better than them at. So be confident. There may be many people that want to know you but think you are stand-offish.

If you are being nice and someone is rude to you it is their problem. Ignore them. Don't be afraid to talk to people. You'd be surprised at how many are shy like you until you talk to them. And maybe you are taking their shyness as hostility to you when it is not hostility but only shyness. And maybe people think you are hostile to them because you don't talk to them.

So when you are out in public put on a smile, look directly at people and say hello if they meet your gaze also. Make a comment about their dog, kid, car or whatever. And don't get discouraged by the grumps. There are a lot of nice people out there that you are missing!
