Actually I'm trying to encourage people to use primary source materials and other resources to find the answers to things they see in places like google sky and can't identify. well the least you could do is ansa the replies mut of astroness?? I suggested two options so far and no response.... Not very encouraging, spaceman. I have yet to see a full and correct answer. I'm not just asking what the phenomenon is, but the proper name of what is specifically causing it in this particular case. That requires more digging to confirm. You know nobody is going to get the answer. It hasn't happened in 4 pages now. Are you just going to endlessly bump the thread forever until somebody gets it? Get over yourself. |

The objective is to try to find the correct answer by digging into the image itself and finding its source. |

I will give a free month upgrade to the first person who can correctly answer both parts of this question. What is this AND what specifically is causing it (I'm looking for a proper name here): Quoting: Dr. Astro [link to farm9.staticflickr.com] This photograph was taken on March 13, 1955. It may not seem like this is enough information to answer the questions, but to a resourceful GLP'er there is already more than enough info here to figure it out. The date might seem like a distractor once you have the correct answer, but I put it out there to help you narrow down the possible sources. Have fun. If no one figures out the answer by tomorrow, I'll give a clue on how to find the answer. I was a bit sloppy in putting this together though, so I may have left a bread crum for those who are particularly clever. a picture of space and its photoshopped. |

Sorry I don't know the fancy term for it since I'm no expert. But I do believe it is a reflection of the telescope's internals. Diffraction Spikes?!? |

I will upgrade you for 3 months if you can identify the exact film plate that this image comes from. Yes, if you do it right it is possible to be specific about that, and it should be part of the solution if you find it without just guessing at it. If however the original question I asked is answered first without this bonus part, this bonus is null and void. This bonus itself contains a kind of hint, doesn't it? |

It appears as bright object combined with background radiation and the "broken" appearance is because the image is being combined/created from multiple sources. The image is basically a mosaic of images captured by multiple radio telescopes known as radio interferometry. That's my theory anyways... |

The more massive star becomes a giant which spills gas onto the secondary star, causing it to expand and become engulfed. The secondary, lighter star and the core of the giant star spiral inward within a common envelope. The common envelope is ejected, while the seperation between the core and the secondary star decreases. The remaining core of the giant collapses and becomes a white dwarf. The aging companion star starts swelling, spilling gas onto the white dwarf. The white dwarf's mass increases until it reaches a critical mass and explodes causing the companion star to be ejected away. |
