But why on earth would you need to eat them?

Kudzu!

You can eat the leaves when they are young, we've tried it - it reminded me of spinach.

You can make jelly from the root, but we haven't tried that.

Yes, yes, yes!

Kudzu is your friend and can keep you from starving to death.

All parts of Kudzu are edible...leaves, STEMS and roots.

It is plentiful on the east coast///florida/georgia, etc.

It doesn't grow out my way....too dry.

Or at least in my yard they are. Dandelion, thistle, burdock, dockweed. Yep, all delicious foods, if prepared correctly.
So, no excuses! don't starve!

Mullein and Poke Week too. Poke Week is delicious and Mullein is wonderful if you have asthma or bronchitis as a remedy.

I have eaten Poke Weed. Pick it in the early spring when the leaves are small and rinse and rinse and rinse.

Mullein is awesome!

Without it I would have died of pneumonia a few times :(

I read Green Deene's newsletter weekly. He's in FL, so lots of the plants he talks about don't grow in Puget Sound, but enough are everywhere, so I don't mind.

Another good site is Linda Runyon's OfTheField.com with her site and a monthly e-newsletter Wild Times. She even sells what looks like a deck of playing cards with edible greens on them so that you can verify before trying to eat anything.

And for the poster who wondered why we'd even care to eat any of them... what will you do for food when there isn't any to be bought at the grocery stores? You might be able to store rice and other dry goods, but your greens are going to be mighty important for good health and bumpdigestive tract function.

There are some good books on this topic and a lot of others that would be helpful in a dire scenario (and no internet).

Kudzu is evil. ;)

Weeds are flowers misplaced.

Re: All those "weeds" in your yard, that you hate, are food!
Ohhhh...I love this thread! I look for wildflowers in my spare time in the spring and summer, and try to identify them. I have a pretty sizable collection of wildflowers that I've pressed that are in two albums, at this point.

Off hand, I know wild carrot/Queen Anne's Lace often has one purple flower in the center of the umbel, which can help with identification. If you're still not sure, don't eat it, of course. I've pulled up wild parsnip before, I think the sap gives a burn to the skin if the sunlight hits it.

Broad leaf plantain and other plantains are common to many lawns/waste areas, and are edible, galinsoga is another common weed that is edible, sumac berries can be made into tea...spotted touch-me-not often grows near poison ivy and if crushed can help alleviate the skin irritation of poison ivy.

Great thread! applause

There's also a lot of info on eating wild plants/weeds in the "Recession Proof GLP" threads.Go to Topics, Economy, Recession Proof GLP.

[link to www.godlikeproductions.com]

In one of those threads there was a link to a great site on landscaping with edible trees/plants/shrubs/flowers. There were hundreds of common landscaping plants listed that I had no idea were edible. Some I already knew about like many of the flowers. But most I didn't & even had some of them in my yard already but would have never tried to eat them.

I didn't bookmark it at the time so have to go through the threads again. If I find it I'll post it to this thread.

I did a google search looking for the site but it didn't come up but I know the link to it is in one of the recession proof threads.

If you need to do some landscaping you might as well make it edible beyond the normal fruit trees and have both the landscaping & weeds to eat.

Please do some research before you start eating weeds. Many are edible but only at certain times under certain conditions etc. Get familiar with your yard and the area around you cause you can survive but you need to be educated on what and when to eat certain things.

We are not cows, goats etc....Our bodies are not built to digest everything in the yard under every circumstance.

Mallow - common or marsh, whichever you happen to have in your part of the world. The greens and seed pods can be eaten raw or cooked. Soaked in water, it gets all mucilaginous - it's good for thickening (kind of like okra), and supposedly good for colds/sore throats. And for making marshmallows. That was actually originally how they were made. It's very easy to identify, too.

In addition to the better known food and medicinal qualities, dandelion roots contain a lot of inulin, and can be used as starter for natural soda (search for recipes that use a "ginger bug" and substitute dandelion root for the ginger).

I like purslain, pigweeds, and shepards purse myself. I've never learned to like the bitter weeds such as dandelion. Although I would love to try out that recipe that I have for dandelion flower wine. (I just don't want to pick the 5 gallon bucket full of flowers.)

Some common garden plants are edible as well. Rose hips (rose seed pods), pansies, and marigolds are edible.

Just be careful that you don't eat anything that's been sprayed or is poison. (Such as zalea, crocus, daffodil, foxglove, oleander, rhododendron, jack-in-the-pulpit, lily of the valley, and wisteria -All poison!)

Everything in the yard will kill the livestock as well. A simple rhody bush will kill a goat (And a person.)

Hopefully people here have a few more brains. Hopefully.

Learned last spring to identify edible weeds, picked them and put them through the juicer. Very very dark green nasty stuff which tasted a-okay once I added some stevia. Great as a health tonic, or cleanser.
