GLP HELP DESK REQUEST: Any mechanically and/or electrically knowledgeable folks?
I was told that my snow-blower's electric starter thingamabob requires a 14 gauge power cord - I found one. It's not long enough to reach a working outlet though. So my question is this: Can I piggy back my 30' 16 gauge outdoor cord onto the proper 14 gauge starter cord? I'm thinking no, but electricity and I have an understanding. I don't mess with it and it doesn't kill me.

Double the 16 gauge up...you will have 8 gauge. Enough amperage capacity for the task..

I'm an electrician. A 16 gauge ext cord can not safely handle most snow blowers for any significant time. Many snow blowers are about 10 amps (1200 watts) or more, and you should really have at least a 14 gauge cord for anything in the 9-12 amp range. More than that consider 12 gauge, but your recommended cord was 14 gauge so I'm assuming it is not drawing more than 12 amps.

You could do it but the cord will get so hot it'll melt all the snow.

Never use a smaller guage wire than is called for, especially with high amp long duration loads like electric motors. Your smaller extension cord will heat up and could burn through the casing and short out. If you are running that extension cord from inside your house, you could catch the carpet or anything else the wire is touching on fire.

Get the right cord.

"God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always, well informed... If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty... Let them take arms... What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. " - Thomas Jefferson in 1787
