stinkbug User ID: 1375508 United States 02/01/2013 04:48 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Okay, so all seems to be well. I use Chrome for most browsing and it seems to keep track of every little backspace, etc. for cripes sake. Well, not anymore. HA! My plugins for Chrome are still there and working. IE seems to still work okay. Privacy Mantra did okay, really. That other program you recommend is not free. But I don't know what it does that Privacy Mantra does not do. Maybe it depends on which browser you are using. I don't use FF and don't even have it installed on this PC. Thanks again for posting this thread. I always thought I cleaned up after myself pretty well until today. I just don't like anything keeping track of everything I do. When I start the computer or a browser, I want it to be like it's the first time. |

When I start the computer or a browser, I want it to be like it's the first time. Excellent! You can get it as a torrent but it's pretty much like stealing it though. I didn't want to get the thread deleted by telling people how to use torrents so you're going to have to figure that one out on your own. It is available there though. Mantra worked as well and an easy way to see if it actually worked is to download one of the index.dat file viewers (not a cleaner) and see if it's all cleaned up. |

As for FF, I stopped using that years ago when they did some updates to it that took 2 minutes to open the damn program. That was the end for me & haven't looked back. Glad it worked out for you! Now you can let out that huge, glorious sigh of relief. You're clear. Don't forget to add it to your daily or weekly or whatever computer maintenance schedule. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 20053617 United States 02/01/2013 05:12 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There are many free programs that will erase every single one of these index.dat files safely and securely from your PC. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33457620 My personal favorite is Tracks Eraser Pro. It's fast and easy to figure out. I'm not sure if this is a free program or not, but the people in the know will know where to find a free version. Torrents..cough cough. This program not only allows you to access and delete ALL of your index.dat files, but also allows you to test it and make sure they were all deleted. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. This is a HUGE privacy violation and you should know how to properly clean your computer. Microsoft refuses to create programs that will get rid of these and locks these files on your PC so that you can't get rid of them. Fuck that. This is THE way to ensure your online privacy. Only problem is when your information is stored in a database like MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc. |

If I've left some doubt in your mind, I apologize. This was just my personal experience with CC. If it fails even once, I don't trust it. Just get a viewer and check to see if they're gone. |

It picked up nothing from Firefox, where I use Ghostery and private browsing with cookies off, etc. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22427336 Internet Explorer is the one that saves everything. That is where all files are located. You did it right. I need to correct this information. Internet Explorer AND Windows, stores this info. Check both areas. |
