I honestly think it is a combination of both.
Life doesn't hold many outlets for wonder if you are not religious, or into most things. Although the occult remains an elusive and strange creature. One that even I find myself coming back to time after time.
Now.. people can be into the occult without being inherently evil or fully even understand what they are saying or doing.
So when you tell me the occult exists on a massive scale in most social circles say in Hollywood, I tend to think it is much more of fascination among the bored and wealthy. The term illuminati' is so stupid these days, so full of intrigue and mystery until, well until you look into it.
It's stigma is pretty major right now, but only because I see those who know nothing about the occult, being afraid of what they do not know. It's a common thing. The same reason why the ocean is terrifying, or other religions, or space is.

So when you say that the illumimati does not exist, that would be foolish to assume when it is everywhere around you, clearly saying "hey I'm illumimati!" But... To what degree does it exist? Only in theory, in my opinion. We need to think about it terms of a secluded secret group among the bored. Let's say that jay-z asks his attorney what he does with his free time, because he would like to belong to a more inclusive group. Then, he proceeds to inform him of his occult interests, which means nothing, and because the idea in Hollywood is that ideas are recycled, there is nothing new. So, he latches on to this, looks it up, and then it starts to make its way into his music. But not in the way that you cannot recognise it anymore, only in the way that it reminds you of other occult references you've heard before.

The only real thing to be worried about are the people that take it further than that, and begin to extend their new interest into a new sub group, and subsequent ideas then show up in their work, that are no longer recognizable to you as what you know of the occult.

We are safe is they continue to talk about terms you know, it is when they stop the period of wonderment, and intrigue, and then take it to a level you do not understand.
