I have been using windows 8 for several weeks now and I like it. It is quite intuitive and you have to realize this is the direction technology is going. Yes big brother is there but so what if they know what you are doing. Big brother is everywhere! If you like the old desktop feel there is a big app on the windows 8 startup page. Click it and you are back into the old world feel.

I wish I worked for Microsoft. I'm just a regular consumer. What I stated is true.

I'm not just comparing speed. Windows 8 is actually better than Windows 7 which both are much better than any Linus POS.

I'm running Windows 8 on a slow AMD APU processor and its quick. I can imagine it must be much quicker on an I7.


I used to be a Microsoft employee. Awesome company to work for. Great pay, great atmosphere, lost of time off and stock options, 100% free healthcare for anything with nothing out of paycheck for it or out of pocket for any services or prescriptions including ER, ambulance, hospital stays etc. Fun morale events and team building exercises. Free soda machines. Free starbucks coffee machines. LOL!

why would you make the assumption I never used it ?

Linux is impractical. Jesus, why recommend it at all? The people that can benefit from using Linux are already using it. (Ubuntu makes an excellent web server). But for regular people, whats the effing point when you have to compile code to upgrade the kernel and whatnot. -That's why Linux will never BE Windows.

OS X is a good alternative if you need something different. Granted, you will also need a mac, (or know how to build a Hackintosh. (and then deal with driver inconsistencies etc).

Windows 8 is different. People freak out, every time something changes. I get more phone calls about where the buttons in office moved to between office 2007 and 2010, than anything else. Honestly, OSes in general are starting to stagnate; at least MS is trying something different. I appreciate that. I think Windows 9 will be better, and will fix all of the weird usability stuff; but I appreciate the new direction.

Myself, I use OS X. It's fast, you can dig into Unix terminal stuff if you want to, and has all of the pretty niceties. I hope 10.9 brings something different besides more iOS features though because MS will catch up.

Yep that's the spirit, I hate hardware though. In fact I hate fixing stuff in general, but sometimes you gotta do it and it's best to have some experience.

Anyway Linux just forces you to learn TOO much stuff, I mean I would recommend it for a little kid to just start with Linux and when they're older they'll be miles beyond the average person in computer knowledge. But for regular folk like me it was too much a headache, and I really gave it a try. When Ubuntu just mysteriously died on me one day it was enough for me and I switched to W7, it has been an amazing experience from then on.

My tip, download "Classic Shell" if you use Windows 8.

I thought Linux would be cool to learn too but after a year with it, I learned its just a waste of time. Linux is very buggy and their software is incomplete or buggy like its in an alpha version or something. My webcam wouldn't even work right and its 7 years old.

After using Windows 8 awhile, I wouldn't go back to Windows 7 nor any Linux distro.

a 1.5 year upgrade is something to be proud of. I upgrade all of my computers, desktop esp about every 6 months. Anything less and you are way behind

No worries, first thing I do when I get a new laptop is clean out the CRAP

I am a PC tech by trade. Win 8 is TERRIBLE. A significant number of my clients that have purchased PCs in the months following the release of Windows 8 have called me asking me to downgrade back to Windows 7.

I am making a KILLING just from the labor, I am selling them copies of Win 7 at my cost.

I have ordered MULTIPLE copies of the OEM version of windows 7 just to keep up with the demand, I know I'm not alone.

Win8 will not last long, at least in the desktop, non-touchscreen notebook/laptop market.

Good to know that your windows send them everything you do.
The ability for them to shut you down,link into your system at any time. etc.....

Oh I know! My husband playfully picks on me when I'm ready for a new laptop every year or so, and doesn't get why I update stuff so often in between...but he also doesn't really understand - not into computer at all. He can check his email, go on FB or type something on Word if needed, and do his online classes of course, but that's about it. Nothing as far as maintaining a computer =)

Well, in my experience, it seems that every other version of windows is good. Xp - loved it, Vista? HATED it...then when windows 7 came out I was much happier! So far with 8, I have no complaints, except that - it really doesn't seem that much different then windows 7.

Well, either you are more tech savvy than most general Windows users out there, or you are using Windows 8 in a non-production environment. Win 8 is really only suited to surfing the net and reading email/social networking.

Usability experts find Windows 8 confusing to learn how to use. Comments on this thread are having to instruct people to a 3rd party website just to learn how to install a recognizable feature such as a start button.

Kubuntu Linux is free and much more stable and user friendly than it was. Try it if you haven't.

My laptop is used for that yes. But my husband also takes college classes online...I used to but finished this past fall semester. I also use my laptop for pictures - store them on here, and also back them all up to an external hard drive. I have different programs I use with my pictures: greeting card maker, calendar maker, etc. Printer projects...I also sell AVON as a side thing and rely on my laptop for keeping track of expenses/profits, printing things I need, etc.

I put Windows 8 on my PC the other day. It didn't work with my DVD-RW device. For 200 dollars one would expect magic, so I wiped the piece of shit clean. What a joke. Glad it was a gift.

Wow a lot of Linux haters out on this thread -- LOL. Anyway, I'll make the argument for Linux in this way -- despite what is being said out on this thread Linux is a very viable and usable OS. And it is easy to use and work with.

I have been using Linux for about 12 years and these days at least 85% of my computing is done on a Linux machine. I do use Windows and OSX occasionally because of some programs that don't work under emulation -- i.e., Microsoft SQL Server.

My feelings about things are like this -- use whatever OS which you feel comfortable with -- and which works the best for you. If you like Win 8 -- then so be it. I personally don't like Win 8 -- although I will probably end up using it in the near future -- cause my business involves computing.

When I was doing professional photography, I would run into the same issues -- flaming because of the equipment I used. Nikon and Canon photogs would routinely rag me about using Olympus equipment. But Olympus was what I felt comfortable using and what got the job done for me.

Don't be afraid to try other OSes -- but again use what you feel comfortable with and what works for you...

BTW, this is being posted from a Linux machine...VIVA LINUX...LOL.

I think I'm just gonna stick with Windows and NOT mess with the laptop I plan to give my son. He's used to Windows 7 from using that laptop anyway, before I got this new one last week, and I would rather keep it that way. Not saying I'm totally opposed to trying Linux someday, just not on what is technically my son's laptop now =)

Yes, good point, and yes I Do =) My main thing is pictures - I take a LOT of pictures of my kids, family, etc. I do store them on my laptop (which is one reason I prefer a laptop with a bigger hard drive..this one has 1 TB..should be good, haha)...but I also have copies of each pictures stored on an external hard drive. If I lost my pictures, Id be SO upset....have some from when I first met my husband, up to 3 days ago...all 3 births of my kids.....our wedding, etc. Tons! haha

But, I personally will never own a Mac...I think they're way overpriced and don't see whats so great about them (and yes I've used them before)
