Re: Windows 8 - New user here
Wow a lot of Linux haters out on this thread -- LOL. Anyway, I'll make the argument for Linux in this way -- despite what is being said out on this thread Linux is a very viable and usable OS. And it is easy to use and work with.

I have been using Linux for about 12 years and these days at least 85% of my computing is done on a Linux machine. I do use Windows and OSX occasionally because of some programs that don't work under emulation -- i.e., Microsoft SQL Server.

My feelings about things are like this -- use whatever OS which you feel comfortable with -- and which works the best for you. If you like Win 8 -- then so be it. I personally don't like Win 8 -- although I will probably end up using it in the near future -- cause my business involves computing.

When I was doing professional photography, I would run into the same issues -- flaming because of the equipment I used. Nikon and Canon photogs would routinely rag me about using Olympus equipment. But Olympus was what I felt comfortable using and what got the job done for me.

Don't be afraid to try other OSes -- but again use what you feel comfortable with and what works for you...

BTW, this is being posted from a Linux machine...VIVA LINUX...LOL.

Thank you =)

I think I'm just gonna stick with Windows and NOT mess with the laptop I plan to give my son. He's used to Windows 7 from using that laptop anyway, before I got this new one last week, and I would rather keep it that way. Not saying I'm totally opposed to trying Linux someday, just not on what is technically my son's laptop now =)

if you download a "live verson" of linux you don't need to touch the HD. Just boot the live disk and no changes will be made to your HD, so you cant test out linux and later install if you wish or pop the disk back out and reboot back to windows. I highly recommend lubuntu as its low resource and "windows" like.

If you don't like using the apps store you can swip the right menu out and click on the search button and search apps or whatever you want.

Re: Windows 8 - New user here
So I recently upgraded to a new laptop, that came with Windows 8. It's a Sony Vaio, and super fast: 8 GB RAM, 1 TB hard drive, 3d generation I-7 processor, HD display and webcam, backlit keyboard.....I'm kinda a computer geek deep down, in that, I like my laptop to be fast and have good specs.

Anyway....I've only had it about a week, and I'm just wondering - is there anything, besides the start page, that is that different then windows 7? Anything I should look at/play around with?

Just curious..thanks!
 Quoting: amywood71605

You should look at/play around with zeroing your hard drive
and do a clean install of Windows 7, which is shitty
compared to XP, but your hardware probably wont allow
going back to XP.

With each successive OS, Microsoft gets worse and worse.
Out with the good, in with the bad.

Re: Windows 8 - New user here
I use Windows XP with virtually everything disabled or removed. The system is about 1.95 GB before additional software
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33362437

I thought XP was good. Tried Win 8 and didn't like it. Had Win 7 (Home Edition) and hated it. Now running Win 7 (Enterprise Edition) and like it. Won't be upgrading.

Yeah....downgrading to Win 7.

Win8 is a joke.

Really think so? So far I'm happy. I don't see how it that much different, I will say that (besides the start screen), but I wouldn't say I am unhappy with it. I wasn't really looking to upgrade to it, but the new laptop came with it of course. That and Microsoft Office 2013, instead of 2010. Happy so far with that too, but haven't used it too too much yet.

The touch screen part is pretty neat too. Makes windows 8 more fun for sure.

tell me how touch screen, with your arm flying around the screen like someone with the end stage of MS, is better than your index finger doing exactly the same job with a mouse?

This OS is a total abortion, and all it is doing is disenfranchising people who are not tech savvy, and that is a LOT of people.

For certain programs, its neat. Example- there's an art program....I use one of the "pens" I have for my Kindle Fire - and my kids can use that - and its MUCH easier for them then using a mouse. For some games I play, touch screen is easier and more efficient then the mouse.

Windows 8 and laptop.......not so good.

Windows 8 and tablet......good/great.

That's all you need to know. Tablet-driven.

You can revert back to Windows 7...........
