Re: FDA recalls drug that doesn't work for years
The FDA is doomed to failure, just like every single Federal agency. Every penny of salary paid to these people is money stolen from the taxpayer...

Now for an ad: If you have breathing problems, your choices are FDA-approved meds, or methods the FDA has no involvement in -- Look into Salt Room Therapy before the FDA tries to shut it down...
Best Wishes,
Uncle Alyosha

And here's a GLP-appropriate Bible verse (atheists may read, too):

God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong.

Re: FDA recalls drug that doesn't work for years
Those who have an actual biological need for this drug, such as myself, are greatly affected.

It is not just a placebo for some people ... my personal well-being and more importantly that of my husband and young children REQUIRES that I take his drug and that it be effective. I have tried to not take it and the results are disastrous.

That said, I HATE AND DISTRUST BOTH THE FDA AND BIG PHARMA. They are both corrupt to the core and this kind of scandal and harm to actual humans is the bastard child of their fornication.

Nevertheless, some of us are at their mercy, even though it sucks to high hell!

Not everyone is cured by alternative medicines or just 'sucking it up'.

Some of us have to walk through this mine field.

So ya'll who have never walked a mile in our shoes, please show a little kindness in your posts -- it wouldn't hurt you at all to do so.

the sky is falling

one drug out of thousands of generics is deemed not equivalent. Sure the FDA fucked up in not acting quick enough, but seriously, move on, nothing to see here
whatever
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14191002

The problem is that every drug on the market has been approved by the FDA. Every drug that has been recalled (over 1700 in 2009) was approved by the FDA.

Do you really want to put your life in their hands?

Well said.

INTERPRETATION:
Most generic AED products provide total drug delivery (AUC) similar to reference products; differences in peak concentrations between formulations are more common. Switches between generic AED products may cause greater changes in plasma drug concentrations than generic substitutions of reference products.

[link to www.aan.com]

The investigators reported that in 39 percent of cases, switching from one generic to another would cause a difference of 15 percent or more in peak serum concentration of the drug. (See “Data on Generic Antiepileptics.”)

If you're an epileptic would you trust that?

I know generic Depakote and Lamictal can be fucked up.

Dear "whatever" you have your head buried deep in the sand.
Having known bipolar friends who depended on these drugs and then commiting suicide because they were not being helped, think again before blowing off something that you have no concept regarding.

They both hit dopamine and norepinephrine. Wellbutrin is actually a substituted amphetamine.

So you're both right. Dexedrine is just more powerful.

That's the FDA's way of trying to legitimize itself and protect their salaries. If they were a real agency tasked with protecting citizens from bad things, we wouldn't have shit like fluoride in the water and aspartame in every pack of chewing gum. They are not an agency to protect the people. They are an agency of big pharma.

They are not there to protect you.

The way shit like this gets on the market in the first place is what really bothers me. Who knows what other kinds of poison they let on the market this way.

FDA officials should be force fed all their illegaly approved drugs!

I don't depend on the FDA, but thanks for the extra caps and exclamation points asshole. I chose a better route than to put my faith in any government agency.

My point was to warn others, who are looking to the FDA to help them, understand the FDA's stated purpose is a lie.

Your comprehension is lacking.

The FDA is just the government liaison to Big Pharma, much like the USDA is just the government liaison to Big Agra, and Treasury is liaison to the Big Banks. Don't you guys get it yet? We have been slowly becoming a fascist/communist country for well over 20 years now...

A guy at work was on a particular drug after he had a bypass surgery. That and Niacin. After two years, they switched him to a "new and improved" drug ... and Niacin. After five years on that drug, they pulled him off it, telling him that research showed little to no effect from the drug. They then put him on yet a third drug ... plus Niacin. I've been telling him for the past three years that the only thing which was working was the Niacin. All those other drugs were just siphoning money from his health insurance. He thinks I'm nuts. lol

eta: Forgot to mention that in the mean time, he has gained about 150 pounds.

Most patients don't know how to work with their doctor, and their doctor isn't competent in the first place!

I can relate though, my blood levels of Depakote were so high my hands were shaking so much that all the food would fall out of my spoon while I was eating. I'd also spill water all over the place when moving it from my mouth to the table. Also, my hair was falling out like crazy. Lowering the Depakote and adding in propranolol for a bit eased up the side effect. Embarassing because people tend to think that's alcohol withdrawal.

Why was the Depakote level so high? I lost 40 pounds in 3 months because of the wretched drugs a competent doctor took me off. Now my doctor got kicked out of the practise probably because he detested the pharma reps so much and refused to have anyone tell him what to do.

So I said fuck it and went back to Dr. Feelgood. He'll just give me whatever I want and tell me the dosage I'm taking of addicting drugs is "really low" but the insanely potent complex combination of drugs I'm taking is "really good".

Now, I feel better.

Im ADHD, with an emphasis on the hyperactive part, and I have been off my dose for a month an half because the price increased by a factor of 5. (no kidding) I take Dexedrine everyday and have for years, I'm still treated like a criminal at most pharmacies. With out my meds my mind is pretty much scrambled eggs, I don't have any physical withdrawals, but my short term memory drops to nothing, and I have extremely low patience.

In anycase I believe they are pushing this new drug called vyvance, a pro-drug version of dex. The generic should cost about 15$ for a bottle of 100, except they have manipulated the market so that it costs about as much as the new one, ~160$. The old drugs works, and I have no desire to mess with it. The last thing I want to do is hop back on the medicine-go-round, that has cost me countless productive time periods.

Re: FDA recalls drug that doesn't work for years
My ex-boyfriend is a internal medicine physician. I was with him for 3 years and let me tell you...I saw some of the most unethical practices I've ever seen. Did you know that doctors get kick back for prescribing these types of medicines? That's right...they get PAID to dope you up. let me tell you how they do it. Drug companies send out these so called "Drug Reps" to medical institution to meet with physicians. They give them samples of all the new drugs on the market along with gifts to say thank you for giving me your time. First they hand out pens, hand towels, note pads, t-shirts, water bottles etc. You know...little stuff. Once they have your "somewhat" attention, the gifts get a little better. Example, portable mini speakers, golf ball sets, travel bags, dinner vouchers, etc. These things may seem like nothing but hold on, this gets better.

You see, the drug reps know what the doctors is prescribing because every time a patient gets a prescription filled, the prescribing doctors information goes into a national data bank. These data banks are monitored differently in every state. This monitoring system is there to supposedly make sure that doctors are not over prescribing narcotics to patients. The patient's information in the past was available for all to see up until HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) was enforced. Well, the reps go into the system (CERNER-MSMEDS), runs a query selecting the doctors name and the specific medicine that they are inquiring about and there you have it. Once these reps see that the doctor is in deed prescribing their product. The gifts get bigger because they want to keep these doctors happy. The gifts are trips, electronics, spa treatments, training courses, recognition in medical studies, and of course good old fashion CASH!! That's right...they get MONEY!! I've seen this with my own eyes by dating a physician and I used to be a CERNER administrator. It's disgusting. These Drug companies bribe these doctors because they want to keep them from prescribing generics to patients. The drug company makes bank when the patient uses brand names instead of the generic because their more expensive. Doctors in force insurance companies to pay for the brand names by calling in "pre-authorizations" for the patients. However the patient in most cases will have to pay a slightly higher copay.

It's horrible and it's bribery but doctors don't see it that way They see it as a thank you and some doctors abuse the system. They'll over medicate patients just for the cash kick backs. Some doctors can get up to $5,000 a month from drug companies that make mood stabilizers. What's even worse is that a lot of the patients don't even need these meds and they get them anyway. The patient could make an appt to see the doctor because they're having headaches or what not. The doctor, who is a professional and knows best, will give them an mood stabilizer insisting that they're suffering from depressing. The doctor will give the patient samples that they were given by these reps for patient to use until the authorization is approved by the insurance company. If it is not approved the patient will get the same medication only in a generic form. But it doesnt stop there, guess who owns those pharmaceutical companies that make the generic meds...the big drug companies that make the brand names. It's a nasty money hungry system that is so corrupt and nothing will be done about it.
Want to know why? The biggest private money contributions to the US gov comes from the pharmaceutical industry. Did you know that the US and New Zealand are the only two countries where direct to consumer (DTC) advertising of prescription drugs is legal. Geez, I wonder why.

I hate to say it but I have a feeling this is going to get worse.
